My play director in high school asked me to light the stage in shades of gray. My inexperienced SME mind made me ask, “You mean you want some parts dimmer than others?” I could not convince her that gray was the same as white, only not as bright. I asked if she wanted me to put gray gels on some of the lights and she said, “Yes.” When I showed that to her she said, “That’s not gray, it is dim.” Ultimately, I wised up, said “Let me try something else.” I put purple gels on some of the lights and she loved it.
