If you could inhabit the milieu of any movie, what would it be? I don’t necessarily mean that you’d interact with the characters of the movie, but that you’d live in the same locale, deal with the same type of people, wear the same type of clothes, eat and drink what they do, etc. We’ll even, for the sake of argument, allow you to ignore any unpleasant social, political, or economic realities of the putative time and place of the movie to the same degree that they’re ignored in the movie.
First one that comes to mind for me is the Scottish village of Furness in Bill Forsyth’s Local Hero.
The Godfather.
Just for the clothes and gold and money and hot Italian women.
Not much on the murder and deceit and constantly watching over my shoulder, but I could get used to it.
Summerisle just felt like the home I never had. would have been a great place to be a teenager (although I wonder who the analogous male to Willow would be - do the teenage girls go to the Laird for finishing school the way the boys coming of age go to Willow?)
For me it would have to be The Big Sleep. Eating in diners, drinking in cheap bars, sleeping in your detective agency…why, I’ve already got the right clothes for it.
