What national news sites are still free?

Fox News asks for a subscription to many of the stories. Now CNN is requiring one for all stories.

NBC, ABC and CBS News.

NPR, Associated Press, Axios, The Hill. I just got an email from Reuters that they are moving to a digital subscription model now, with a limit on articles you can read for free each month.

Sort of accurate. Like other sites, you can visit occasionally without subscribing. I just read two articles without even a warning.

Users get a limited number of articles for free, but subscribers get unlimited articles and bonus content. By subscribing, you also help support the trusted journalism you rely on daily.

REMOVED links and words.

I got notified this week in the Axios app that they are terminating the app in November and going to electronic newsletter only.
A shame, as I really like their app, layout, and journalism; a newsletter won’t work well for me.

It says “This extension is not available on the Google Chrome Web Store.” It makes me wonder if it is totally legit.

I mentioned this in the Discussion for the Polls only thread, but I’ll mention it here as well.

REMOVED links and words.

And for that matter, those of us who prefer text-based news in the first place are very possibly a small enough minority for it to not be an issue.

I was annoyed when I followed a link to a CNN story from Google News and was presented with a paywall. I tend to read and link to stories from sites without them.

And I thought we weren’t supposed to talk about how to get around paywalls anyway…

It used to be, a long time ago, but I think publishers asked for it to be taken down. I’ve used it for years, though, for what’s it worth. You can also look at the source code or ask an AI to explain it.

Oh, my bad. I’ll refrain from doing so in the future.

But is it really “getting around” the paywall when you’re going to an alternate site offered up by the same people who run the pay site? REMOVED

No, which is why that website wasn’t brought up.

Moderating:

I removed the reference to bypass CNN. That was not a CNN owned site. Please do not link to ways to bypass paywalls.

My bad. Sorry.

They are a news aggregator site like Google News and include lots of stories from Washington Post, Wall Street Journal, etc–they pay the sites for reprint permission.

The Guardian is free, although they will bug you to contribute. And remember it’s theguardian.com.
