What new PC games should I buy?

All,

In the next day or two my spankin’ new PC will be at my doorstep. After I assemble it…which could take the next week and a half I need to buy a new game to test it out. Here’s some of the specs:

ABIT KT7A Socket A Motherboard
AMD Athlon Thunderbird 1.4 GHz CPU
512 MB PC133
40GB 7200 RPM hard drive
Voodoo 5 64mb Video
SB Live

What should I try? I loved Populous when it came out…I think Black & White would be cool, Max Payne also sounds neat. Any ideas?

Buy the good ones

You ever try The Sims? I don’t have many computer games, but the ones I do have I love (duh). Virtual Simpsons is also pretty cool (the only con is that it can get boring and if you know the certain keys to press it’s really easy to beat). Both of these games aren’t new, in the sense that they didn’t come off the asembly line yesterday, but they’ve been out for few years.

Black & White is a good choice.

If you’re a BattleTech fan, MechCommander 2 just came out a week or so ago. I’m on my way to pick it up over lunch today.

What sort of game do you like? Strategy, FPS, family-style, etc?

Get Tribes2 and/or Max Payne. They rock, and will give you plenty of eye candy for your video card. Tribes2 needs a fat pipe, so if you are on a modem, or slow connection to the 'net I would reccomend against it.

Wonko, is Max Payne out yet? Last I saw, it was coming down the pipe but hadn’t gone gold yet. If it has, then someone’s making a Best Buy run at lunchtime.

As for recommendations – definitely Mechwarrior 2 if you’re into real-time strategy games. Lots of fun. Also, Unreal Tournament and Half-Life if you’re into first-person shooters (Half-Life on its own isn’t fantastic, but it allows you to play all the cool mods out there like Counter-Strike, which gets my absolutely highest recommendation). If you’re an RPG fan, buy Baldur’s Gate II and/or Diablo II.

Excuse me, but calling Diablo II an RPG is an insult to the genre. It is an action\RPg. There is a difference.

Now that I’ve gotten that out of the way, Baldur’s Gate II is a must if you like RPG’s. Serious Sam is Doom for the 21st century.

Homeworld is cool, but I haven’t played it in quite some time because I constantly get killed after the jump to hyperspace.

The Sims is EXTREMELY addictive. I can blink and two hours have passed by!!

Yep. Max Payne is out. Even though you have a brute of a system (pretty comperable to mine) it doesn’t care for Voodoo cards. I don’t think it would run terribly well.

Get Falcon 4, patch 'er up and let 'er rip. Runs like a dream on powerhouse systems if flightsims float your boat.

Blue Shift is the new upgrade to Half-Life. It includes a patch for Half-Life and HL:Opposing Force that increases the resolution to take better advantage of increased computer power. It also includes the full version of Opposing Force for Half-Life. Previous purchase of hlaf-Life is not required.

Crank the resolution up to 1600x1200 and frag away.

Yes, you must get Max Payne, and yes, it’s out. I guy I work with beat it last night.

Max Payne is excellent, and I don’t like shooters. First rate. Pick it up.

The next great game coming out will be Arcanum. It won’t show off your hardware, but it’s going to be a hell of an RPG.
