What!? No Idol thread?

Yeah, definitely inappropriate “getting to know you” conversation, but I’m going to give her the benefit of the doubt. I’m sure this came up in the production interview, and the producers probably told her to be sure to mention it. Even she seemed a bit embarrassed to be brining it up, saying, “My daddy shot himself, but that’s all right.”

Regarding, the Pickler Junior, am I the only one that heard that her father shot his wife before he shot himself? I’m almost positive I heard that and if that is the case, I wouldn’t want to spread that around if I was his daughter. She seemed embarrassed.

1 Corinthians 11:15

Right! The gospel “sound” is a more contemporary sound than Long Haired Girl’s sound. Isn’t she the one that said she’d be a role model that the country could look up to? I didn’t think the competition was about that.

I couldn’t believe how healthy her hair looked for being 19 years old.

I heard it too. Someone needs to drop a hairdryer into her bathwater.

Heh-heh…yours would look good, too, if you had a “hair attendant” following you around coiffing the 'do all day!

If you live in the South or Utah, there is no doubt that long hair is a hard core church girl- not sure the sect though, but it’s one of the ones that doesn’t allow women to wear pants I think.

Dio, thanks for the corroboration

My wife’s thought was Pentecostal Holiness. I had some relatives who were members, and the young women all had very long hair.

Then I’m watching Miami Ink last night and there’s a girl getting a tattoo to remember her mom. Apparently Mom asked for a divorce so Dad shot her and then went out in the woods and “hung” himself. Poor girl comes home to find Mom dead.

I believe you have to apply to be on Miami Ink now so a story like that will get you noticed on any reality show.

Simon follows the money. He doesn’t care if it comes from Christians or serial killers. I doubt he even knew she was Christian. I think he just thought she would be too hard to groom into his preconception of an idol.

Regarding Pickler 2, I don’t think we can say how quickly she told the judges. Give me the tape to edit, and I can make her tell them while they’re getting out of their cars.

The good part about the precedent of Justin Guarini is they won’t make Jack Osbourne cut his hair. He and the professional backup singer are my favorites so far. I like him for his voice and his deadpanity.

Wow, talk about a uniboob. It’s compression undergarments run amok

For whatever it may be worth – probably not much, but still – I didn’t hate Kellie Pickler herself, so much as I hated the phenomenon of “The Pickler.” Since this show is ostensibly a talent competition, I don’t like it when the producers muddy the waters by giving us a “reason” to vote for one contestant or another, rather than letting the person’s talent and performance be the reason they stick around. Maybe I’m one of the few, but I actually would watch a show where all the contestants did was sing every week, and maybe answer one or two questions about their song choice. I don’t really want to get to know these people. I just want to know whether they can sing music that I like, or that I can at least listen to for an hour or two a week.

So … when I grumped about “another Pickler” earlier, what I was really saying was: “Oh, for the love of all that is good and holy, another person with a horrible, terrible, cringe-inducing backstory! It doesn’t matter if she can sing, because she’s getting through anyway, because her ‘story’ (true or not) makes ‘good TV’!” Which is a shame, because that kind of behavior on the part of the producers diminishes and demeans any actual talent, in a way. Is it so much to ask that they just show me the talent in a vacuum?

I wasn’t sure if it was her boob or the top of her stomach. They kind of melded into each other.

I’ve never seen a stomach like that, all high and round, unless there was a baby or three inside.

Wow. I don’t normally quote a whole post just to respond to the topic sentence, but you opened my eyes and I appreciate that. I really hadn’t even thought of it in those terms before, and I can see very clearly what you mean. And after listening to you, I must say that I feel the same way. I just hadn’t realized it.

{OT}

Disclosure: I did not see the show last night, and I don’t really ever watch AI. I’m only asking this out of curiosity.

How did they portray the city? What was scary about it?

(And yeah, I live there.)

I think they should just do American Idol on the radio, myself…

Very nicely. A bit parochial, but friendly. It opened with the judges being greeted by throngs of fans as they arrived at the hotel. Simon remarked pleasantly that it was the first time people had greeted them on arrival.
