Trencher.
What other cutlery options has the human race made other than "knife, fork, spoon" and "chopsticks"?
The fork itself is a pretty recent invention (Renaissance), previously it was spoon, knife (used to cut but also to skewer the cut bits) or drinking directly from the bowl.
Corkscrew.
What do you mean wine isn’t a food? Its made of grapes…
Cob of Corn holders were a common item in my cultery drawer. The ear of corn shape corn kernel embossing is a vital feature of it.
What is cultlery ? With a knife, you prepare food on your plate, then you use the fork or spoon to move it to your mouth.
My point ? If a knife is cultlery, then cultery is utensil you might use at the table while eating. Because you are preparing the food before picking it up.
So anything like a
runsible spoon … This is a spoon which is better used for scoop and drain (not spiking onto the tines) … so its not actually two in one. A spork is more for a two in one, so you don’t have to swap between spoon and fork, to scoop some food and spike other food.
ladle spoon
teat for a bottle.
cheese shaver
butter shaver
honey dipper
and surely many more.
But then any salt or pepper dispenser is pretty much like a utensil used at the table, although used for storage too ?
We might say many items are more often used as a serving utensils, (eg, not commonly while eating the serving… ) while noting someone could consume cheese direct from the cheese scraper, for example.
Ka-Bar Tactical Spork
To pick up marshmallows to dunk in the chocolate fountain? We use wooden skewers for that.
Damn you, Loach.
I just ordered three of them.
Mankind was so horrified by the invention of the spork by some Dr. Moreau like cutlerist that we collectively withdrew from any further cutlery experimentation.
Push-pops.
Well, there goes $24.96…
So awesome.
Straws are close to that.
This is a honey spoon. And do absinth spoons count?
How about these lobster-eating utensils, or even this fish-knife?
There’s a utensil designed for young children called a pusher - intended to be used with a spoon so they don’t just chase their food off the plate - it’s typically now only given as a Christening gift.
Fish knives, although they are knives, are used in a different way to common table knives - I don’t know if that means they really count as a separate utensil, but they certainly appear as distinct from other knives when a table setting is laid including them.
Finger naps / finger condoms / gloves
I have a feeling there ought to be tons of other special-purpose stuff I’m just not recalling right now. But I did find this snail-eating utensil…
Escargot tongs
Corn cob holders
I read the question to be “what other cutlery cultures exist or existed (apart from the two mentioned)?” rather than “can you name any other types of eating utensil?” Maybe the OP can clarify.
