What purchase made you giddy?

In another thread, I’m going on and on about an old beater car I’ve just bought. I shook hands on the deal last Sunday, and am going to pay for it and drive it home next Sunday. For the past 3 days I’ve had a goofy grin pretty much constantly plastered to my face, and I find my thoughts turning to it as frequently as a teenaged boy thinks of sex.

So - what purchases (or actions, decisions, whatever) have made you downright giddy for extended periods of time?

I felt that way when I got my Miata. It is a fun little car to drive, not practical at all, but still a fun car. First and only convertible I have had, so I was very excited that it was a beautiful sunny day in Seattle when I picked it up. First thing I did was put the top down and drove home, right into rush hour traffic and stop and go traffic for 20 miles with a clutch. Not the wind in your hair experience I was anticipating! But I have had several great driving experiences since then.

Good luck with your car, I am glad you decided to buy it. I think you will have fun with it. I still enjoy driving my Miata quite a bit.

The only recent one was our first house, last year. Giddy and nauseous, in equal parts, since it was ridiculously expensive and needed a fair amount of cosmetic work. So we were super excited, but also filled with “oh god what have we done?”

I bought mine last week.

When I bought my 06 jetta outright. Yup, I own it, no bank paper on it, nobody can take it away from me! And it is almost new … and deisel, heated seats, in dash cd player … and it is all MINE!

My Nintendo DSi that I got as a birthday gift for myself. I’ve used it every day since then!

You coulda gotten something like 18 of mine for the price of yours! :stuck_out_tongue:

I guess I’ve always been a cheap date!

A ring – one of a kind from a Seattle designer, opals and diamonds in a gold band. We bought it with money from the sale of our house, just before we left Seattle. I admired that ring all the way back to Iowa. Oooh, the Wyoming sun makes it sparkle! Let’s see how it looks in Nebraska!

My 2010 Prius still makes me smile after a month of driving (50 mpg!!)

I once got my S.O. a platinum and pearl necklace that was a bit pricey, but seeing her reaction and the fact that she loves it so much five years later still makes me giddy.

Another new car here. 9 years of driving a Hyundai Elantra, and I finally wanted something fun. Trouble is I ordered it in February, and with bankruptcies and all I only got it at the end of September, just in time to go abroad for 3 weeks.

So I am still breaking it in, but I am the proud owner of a 2010 Dodge Challenger RT/J. And yes, dude, it has a hemi.

Now THAT’S the kind of silliness I’m TALKING about!

Dunno if I posted this in the other thread, but guys have told me you can get away with affixing year-of-manufacture plates, so long as you carry the current ones with you. Well, as a 62 this car is 2 years younger than me.

When I was 2 years old, for x-mas my parents gave me a Radio Flyer red wagon. Back then, you got new plates for your car every year. And before custom plates my dad always got his initials (same as mine) and our street address - ES 3116. So when he got his 63 plates, he gave me his old ones - orange with white letters - and we put them on the wagon.

I beat the crap out of that wagon, as did my now-adult kids. Well, my dad is gone, but I still have my little red wagon - with 1962 plate affixed - up above my garage. Dad was a big golfer (as was my mom - also passed), and one of the main uses I’ll have for this car is to golf courses - my favorite fair weather pastime.

I’m not usually a sentimental guy, but it would really give me pleasure if I end up with my dad’s old ES 3116 plate on this car.

When I was more actively buying first edition books or now that I am buying guitars, I get totally giddy. Especially with guitars - for a couple of reasons:

  • I am typically going after a specific guitar because I have decided that there is a feature or quality I want to try on a guitar, so this new one represents an ability to “test my hypothesis” about whether this new guitar will excite me as a player.

  • I am typically haggling and deal-making like a fool. I have limits about how much new $$ I can spend, so I am typically trying to sell a current book or guitar to fund this new acquisition, while at the same time negotiating with the current seller. It is not uncommon for me to have 3 or more sub-deals / moving parts going as I try to pull a deal off. Threading the needle and getting everything to come together is truly giddiness-inducing. When I got my last guitar - a very nice 1940’s Gibson acoustic - I was selling a book to a dealer, selling a couple of other books to a fellow collector, showing a guitar I was considering selling and negotiating with the seller of the Gibson. The dealer book deal fell through, but found another book he was interested in. So, on the last day I had the guitar on hold, I was running downtown in the snow to get back to the dealer to sell the new book (at about 8x what I paid for it) to get the money to actually buy the guitar. Giddy indeed.

Happy giddiness - sounds like you are going to have a lot of fun with your new car.

I felt like Gollum deep in a cave somewhere when the AT&T rep handed me my iPhone and I took it home. I haven’t been more than 100 feet away from it since then. And who said that tethering isn’t enabled on it!

A dress.

I’m about to attend a very special event, with stylish and sophisticated, worldy literati. I, who shop almost exclusively at second hand shops, and am currently not working.

I thought I could find something in one of two specialty consignment shops, only to discover, not even close! I was bordering on freaking out a little, when my girlfriends stepped in.

We discussed it over lunch, my friend swore an oath to my quest, marched me across the street after our meal, into an expensive shop I never even considered shopping in, and up to the second floor ladies fancy dress sale rack. Tried on two, but there was no doubt between us, number one was the one! It looked brilliant, not too old, not too young, and I felt wonderful in it. (That’s gotta help, right?) And, it was within my budget!

I came home, from lunch, with a dress, and absolutely breathless with giddy! I chattered away to my husband, poor fellow, who only 24hrs earlier had been forced to talk me down about the whole ‘out of my depth’ event, as I teetered on the ragged fringes of feaking out. I could not stop repeating, “I can’t believe I found a dress!”

I see the garment bag when I wake up in the morning and get a big smile on my face. There have been a string of stylish young neices and girlfriends coming over to admire it and help me with accessories and a new hair style.

I’m still saying it like I won the lottery - “I’ve got a dress!”

Buying my first motorcycle this summer.

I forgot to add a picture of my baby…

My TENS device. Who needs a Chiropractor? Split and stack a cord of wood? No problem. Back hurts? Not for long. No more appointments, no more adjustments, no more Enya. Best $35 I ever spent.

I bought myself a ring that I fell in love with at the pawn shop. I got a good deal on it too  Just picked it up Monday - had it in lay-away for 3 weeks. Had to keep myself from hopping up and down while we were doing t he paperwork. It’s a bypass style band, little marquis diamond in the center, two small round diamonds on a surround, white gold with some carving on the band with antiquing.

I went to an estate sale last spring. As I was walking in, I watched someone walk out with a Monopoly game based on the Seattle Mariners. I thought to myself it would be neat to find another Monopoly game to add to my collection. Upon entering the house one of the first things I saw was a stack of various Monopoly games along with other Parker Brothers games. The sweet part to me was the price, $3 per game. I bought all 16 Monopoly games, 14 of them are new to my collection. 8 of the 16 are corporate versions that are not available to the public. I found out the recently deceased had a son that worked at Parker Brothers and supplied Dad with a the newest items from his employer.

I now have 76 Monopoly games. Anybody up for a game?

Congratulations on your car, I remember that thread and I’m glad it worked out.

I was giddy when we bought our house. I kissed the floor the first time we walked in as owners.
