What Questions Would You Ask An Employment Interview Panel?

My daughter needs a list of questions that she should ask an an employment interview panel. It’s for a position with Imigration and Customs Enforcement. Questions she has already thought of concern opportunities for further education, a typical work day description, memorable cases, etc.

I thought the dopers might have some good suggestions. What do you think?

I tend to ask about what they consider the most important characteristics a successful person in the job would have. It gives you a chance to see if it is a good fit for you. If they haven’t made it clear, she could tactfully ask why the position is available and the tenure of previous folks in the position.

Also she could ask about the hierarchy/management structure and how independent she would be in the position.

ETA: Of course your OP inplies you know this, but she should have a couple of questions ready - don’t say No when they ask if you have any questions. I bring in a notepad in a portfolio kind of folder so I have a number of questions ready in case I freeze up

The typical workday is good, as is the further education question, and qualities to succeed in the job. I would stay away from asking about memorable cases–it might be taken as a tendency to gossip, and that sounds like a field where confidentiality might be important.

Asking about expected future trends, or how current events have affected the work can be good.

Very good questions! Thanks. I am passing them on. I knew there’d be a few dopers with some good ideas.

I do lots of interviewing as a panel member and the single best ever question I have heard asked by an applicant when asked , “do you have any questions?” was:

“Is there anything that you expected to hear from me that I haven’t covered?”

How can I best prepare myself to be successful here?

I like asking people if they like working there. Also, if they are hard-asses about drinking on the job.

Boss: I’m going to get right to the point. It has come to my attention that you and the cleaning woman have engaged in sexual intercourse on the desk in your office. Is that correct?

George: Who said that?

Boss: She did.

George: Was that wrong? Should I have not done that? I tell you I gotta plead ingnorance on this thing because if anyone had said anything to me at all when I first started here that that sort of thing was frowned upon, you know, 'cause I’ve worked in a lot of offices and I tell you peope do that all the time.

Boss: You’re fired.

George: Well, you didn’t have to say it like that.

What kind of internet access policy do they have?

StG

Seconded.

Also, what are the advancement opportunities? Some organizations have a culture of developing their workers and presenting advancement opportunities, others…not so much.
