If someone pitched this as “imagine John Wick got lion blood in his wounds after being mauled by a lion and got lion powers” I could easily see that being greenlit.
Milking the franchise for all its worth. They got the rights to one hero and a shit ton of villains, making “anti hero” movies is all they can do.
Which is alright by me, as long as the movies are fun.
They spend a buttload of money putting people to work making a product, if the product is good, they should make as many of them as they can.
Some of them are. The Venom movies at least were entertaining, on par with mid tier MCU stuff. Madame Web and Mobius were complete crap.
I would be really interested if this has any measurable effect one way or the other. E.g., if the Kraven movie would have been called “Hunter” or something, would that dip the attention of the general public one way or the other? Because I do know there are people that actively avoid comic movies, so them seeing the Marvel Logo on top of the trailer is actually disengaging them.
There’s a rumor (?) that Venom will be in Spider-Man 4. I hope not. Despite Brock’s reference to Spider-Man I don’t feel as if these two characters belong in the same cinematic universe.
I know this works in comics but I don’t feel like it’ll work in a movie. Yeah I know they already met once in a previous movie but frankly I didn’t really like it.
He was already in Spider-Man 3 so why not?
(You’re correct that they don’t belong in the same universe, but Venom was pulled into Spider-Man’s universe through the usual multiverse shenanigans.)
They probably don’t expect that vast majority to know the first thing about the character. They have a character concept they can make a superhero movie out of. Yay, superhero movie!
What do you mean there are some fans out there that know all this stuff from the comics, and will dissect your movie to bits about faithfulness to the source? Pah! How many of them can there be? People love superheros.
Coming next summer, more hero-adjacent, minor Spider-Man-related characters. Like…
Flash Thompson, Spidey-Fan!
That’s pretty much the same plot of the new one too.
Or they pull a Penguin and have a dark and gritty J Jonah Jameson crime prequel where he’s a sleazy journalist.
In retrospect, it could’ve been a cute addition to the MADAME WEB movie: of course he now figures Spider-Man for a threatening menace; he was Jonah On The Spot to cover that other story, back when a masked man who could stick to walls and superleap around like crazy was swiftly murdering his fellow New Yorkers…
I went and read the wikipedia plot summary, and I see that now. The trailer gives no idea that this is the plot. The trailer give no idea of anything except bigger badder games, and Pepsi is sold in the stands.
I didn’t think it would be possible, but I actually think it is worse for being a redo of the first movie, rather than a new story.
I’m up for the Spider-Pig* movie!
*yes I know, Ham. I like my version.
As long as it’s J.K. Simmons I’m in.
