What’s with the mashed potato? Or Pregnancy cravings a question?

So I thought I was dealing with this whole pregnancy think alright, except for the hideous, evil morning sickness but that’s not what this thread is about.

I’m slowly getting over the “I’m pregnant” shock; I’m now in a comfortably numb place with all thoughts of impending parenthood being carefully repressed.

The bleeding seems to have slowed down and almost stopped which is good. It’s week 10 now so there is only 2 weeks to go and we will go from a 50/50 chance of survival to 70%. This is good also.

But what is with the mashed potato? It seems to be the only thing I want to eat. Am I meant to have cravings already?

Somebody please help me I feel like the mother from that old Corey & Corey License to Drive heaping huge mounds of mashed tatters onto my plate.

Be grateful your craving is an easily satisfied one. I used to get up in the middle of the night and cook roast potatoes and gravy.

And then there was the whole Twister, chicken chips and Coke thing…

When I was about that far along the only things I wanted to eat was toast with nutella.
Now I’m craving avocados, apple anything, Mexican food (Which I CAN’T find up here), ranch dressing & tea with milk (Which I never drank before I got pregnant. I drank a lot of tea, but never with milk.). I went through a mashed potato phase too, but it had to be garlic, preferably with skin in.

My mum’s not around for me to ask info from her, so I don’t know exactly how far along she was in carrying me when th’ craving hit, but it was beer. A bottle of beer for breakfast, every morning.

My grandma, when she was carrying my auntie, wasn’t notorious in th’ family so much for cravings as she was for the way she handled th’ “nesting instinct”, I think it’s called. Preggers in the 1920s, she painted a whole bedroom chocolate brown.

Hey leechbabe–you’re only two weeks ahead of me and I’m craving stuff already too…

If it makes you feel any better I drove for 45 minutes over the weekend to get myself a raspberry smoothie.
Here’s hoping your morning sickness passes as it’s supposed to. My first time around I had it all day, every day until the little guy popped out. This time I’m finding that I don’t get as sick if I simply never stop eating. It’s working in the short term, but I’m afraid I’m going to hate myself for it in–oh–say, about 8 months, when all that weight’s gotta come off somehow. ::sigh::

bella–bloatedly

Thank-god this is normal then, Leechboy thought I was going insane. Glad there is no beer cravings though, don’t know how I’d manage that with the “no alcohol while your preggers” thing.

Being a first pregnancy I have no idea what to expect. My in-laws are giving me all sorts of strange and conflicting advice and my parents are to far away for me to call them all the time.

Three-time veteran here.

It’s not mandatory that one experience food cravings with pregnancy. Some people don’t. Some people do. Everybody’s mileage varies.

Some people just feel so queasy that there are a limited number of foods that they can stand the sight and smell of.

The best advice I ever heard about food cravings was, “As long as you’re not using them as a weapon or as a bid for attention (the stock comedy situation where Mom-to-Be sends Dad-to-Be out into the night in search of pickles and ice cream), then go with the flow.” Generally speaking, your body knows what it’s doing, it’s had millions of years of evolution to perfect this. And also, remember that the massive hormonal shifts of pregnancy have your body’s entire endocrine system in a complete uproar, which includes your food processing system, so your normal food tastes, sensitivities, desires, are all likely to be madly scrambled.

Play with Baloo and learn about your endocrine system.

You want mash p? Fine. Eat mash p.

I craved chocolate covered beef jerky a few weeks ago. Then it was seafood. Now it is Indian food. So do you crave regular mashed potatoes or instant?

Lee I’m craving regular mashed potato with lots of butter, it seems to satisfy the cravings if I do a jacket potato in the microwave and put lots of butter on it.

Thanks for the link Duck Duck Goose very informative. I’ve been following my SIL’s dietary advice of whatever stays down is good for you. The only special midnight trip I have sent leechboy on so far is for strawberry milk and that was to deal with the after effects of a particularly nasty bout of vomiting.

oy.

Double oy.

Bleccchhh.

I had my English hubby try beef jerky in the States (can’t get it here it in the UK). His response? Why do Americans eat dog chews??? As he promptly spat it out the truck window.

Having been pregnant 5 times now - no kiddies though :frowning: - I am very familiar with cravings (3 out of 5 preggie spells were with strong cravings). One I couldn’t get enough pickled onion sandwiches. Another was any veggies. I would eat plates full of just veggies… This last time it was anything spicy, but especially horseradish and ketsup mixed up (coctail sauce essentially) on toast…

Wishing you well through this pregnancy. A good sourse of info for me has been www.babycentre.co.uk (or.com) - they do have various international options as well.

Take care of yourself.
