Last week I spent an entertaining afternoon counting out and bagging up all the 1p, 2p and 5p coins that I have accumulated over the last couple of years.
Grand Total: £51 (c.$82/€78)
I staggered down to the bank and changed half a ton of change into pretty paper money (and one pound coin).
What shall I do with it?

I’m open to suggestions, I just don’t want to see it disappear into the black hole that is my bank balance. It seems like bonus money, so I think I should do something of note with it.
But I can’t decide what. Oh teeming millions, help me please.
I like mad money. Nice to cash in the change and see what you’ve got.
You have several good ideas there. They all seem reasonable to me. Personally, I would either buy/do something nice for myself, or surprise someone I love with a prezzie.
Considering you say it was 1p, 2p and 5p’s, you are in the UK? Well, there is a mini Dopefest being considered in Cambridge, or there is one happening next week in Dublin… Drinks, bus/plane fare.
Can you pay the garage bill without the 51 pounds? I’m in the States, so I don’t know how much money that is.
I guess it boils down to this: If you can afford to pay your bills without this found money, then go have yourself a ball. If you can’t, then use it to pay your bills.
And go get your CD player back from your brother, the git. (Did I use that word right?)
Washte - Yup, I’m in London. I have a bad record with dopefests. I was meant to attend the last two Londopes, but didn’t get my act together. I did go out location scouting with AlexB for the locations though.
ivylass - It won’t pay all the bill, but it would definitely help. But that would be such a boring thing to do. Oh, and yes, my brother is indeed a git. Good choice of word.
OpalCat - You’d have to prove you’re a worthy cause first I’m afraid.
Sorry, Shaolin, but sometimes being responsible is boring. If you need it to get the car out of the shop, then do that. Have your friends come over for a BYOB party if you want, but you need your car.
And you still need to get your CD player back from your git brother.
(SDMB…expanding the vocabularies of thousands the world over.)
ivylass - the problem is, I suspect I may not be a very responsible person. Especially when bonus money is part of the equation. I know I should put it towards the bill, but I kinda suspect that I won’t.
You could be halfway responsible - or slightly less than halfway. 25 on bills, 26 for fun. Not that I’d follow the same advice if it was mine, because I’m terminally dull when it comes to paying bills first. So have fun with part of it at least and I can enjoy it vicariously thru you.
I’d go with the pub friends idea – but I’m just like that.
Actually if the money was really just ‘fun money’ I’d take it down to the Casino and probably lose the lot. Depends if that’s your bag.
Last time I got rid of my change I donated it to one of my friend’s ‘holiday fund’ which was an huge jar (think one of those novelty oversize champange bottles) of change but that’s probably 'cos it save my counting and changing it. Although, if I recall correctly, I just ended up helping them count the entire jar anyway.
Sorry, where was I, ah yes. If you had the money just sitting around and it’s really just extra money then blow it on a night out for you and your friends – or walk into a pub and just buy everyone a drink.
