I was going through a box of knives and stuff the other day and found a whole, tanned buckskin. I don’t remember where it came from. It isn’t from one of my deer, as I didn’t keep heads, hides, or antlers, generally speaking. Regardless of origin, I have it now. It is has been scraped, so no hair. Picture like a fringed buckskin jacket from a cowboy movie. There isn’t enough to make a jacket, so that is out. There’s a couple square feet or so of material here. It’s soft, so something like a knife sheath or holster isn’t a good choice, those require stiff leather.
Ideas?
Sell it for some doe.
Wear it on your head, held down by a headband of some type (I’m thinking something like this.) Wander around introducing yourself to everyone as “Buckskin Jones.”
A vest. Or… I have rocking chair with a buckskin cushion. The cats love it.
Or…pillow cover.
Maybe a guitar strap?
You know, anybody who wants it can have it. I don’t have either the patience or the skills to make anything worthwhile out of it. If you live in the Pittsburgh area, I’ll meet you at the Penn Brewery or one of the House of 1000 Beers locations and hand it off to you.
Moccasins or slippers would be nice.
You need to talk with a leather shop and see what they recommend. Deer skin is very soft and tricky to work.
G-string, and use it to launch your second career as a Native American-themed exotic dancer. Make sure it’s tight enough to hold the dollar bills.
Get a couple more & make an outfit. Seriously, I could use it. I’m doing a primitive biathlon this weekend; some of them give you a time bonus for period attire, which I don’t have. Also, it just looks wrong being ½ old-timey & ½ modern clothes.
Primitive biathlon: Unlike modern Olympic biathlons – in which the participants use cross-country skis and high tech rifles – the “primitive” competitor travels on wooden snowshoes and fires at targets using black powder rifles or muskets.
Sell it.
ETA…I’d take it in a heartbeat if I was near you.
So it’s been pre-chewed?
You could use it for handle material for a knife.
