I am expecting a new addition to the household in a few months (still looking at different box configurations but it will be pretty top-of-the-line, yay!) and considering names for my new darling bundle of joy. Although my current computers are named Osmosis and Vengeance, I’m not going for any sort of theme so it doesn’t need to relate to them at all.
*Nothing against Colbert by the way, I just have a no living real-life persons policy. Fictional and dead characters are OK. And in the same vein as the Colbert satellite naming fiasco, I reserve the right to reject the name that wins this poll (though I will pretty likely accept it), but in the event that I do I promise to name a prominent hard drive partition with the winning poll result.
Computer naming is serious business. I need to know more information about the prospective new one. What will be it’s strengths? What will you primarily use it for?
My machine names:
MacBook: Yggdrasil
iMac: Ganymede
iPhone (1st gen): Odin (it docked to Yggdrasil)
iPhone 4: Loki (due to antenna issues)
Well one model I’m looking at is an i7 3.33 Ghz 6-core processor with 12 GB of DDR3 RAM and an ATI Radeon 5850 graphics card. Of course with these kinds of specs it’s marketed as a gaming rig but the primary reason I want that kind of processing power is for high-end video editing/compositing applications like After Effects and 3D rendering applications that tend to suck down memory like no other. So it’s primarily for work/projects but I do occasional gaming as well.
Already taken, I named my second hand 196mb ram, 30gb hd laptop Multivac
My other Computers:
Orson (The most modern one).
Giskard (As the robot in Asimov’s books, a second hand desktop)
Dorita (From “computadorita”= “little computer”, the old “Most Modern”)
Is this a serious question? Every computer has to have a name, which you establish when you first set it up (of course it can be changed later). It’s mainly for identifying it on the network. To see your computer name go to My Computer/Computer properties if you’re on a Windows machine or About this Mac (I believe) on a Mac.
Man, my network has been “Sherwood Forest” forever, and I had it going good with all Robin Hood themed names.
My work computer has always been King Richard, but then I got a replacement machine and had to keep King Richard around…and this machine became Richard_III. It’s actually the third incarnation of King Richard but I’m pretty bummed that I had to abandon the Robin Hood theme.
Man, I just realized that the machine I just took to the dump was Robin_Hood himself. So long!
I only have one computer on our home network, so its name is my name. I think that the relatives who have more than one have named them TheirFirstName/Location, but I’m not completely sure. The words Monkey and Piglet may have slipped in somewhere.
With that kind of power and beauty I’d go with a goddess name. Female for the beauty from the graphics card, but definitely a major goddess, because of the power. I christen her…Artemis.
