My son’s SO broke her leg badly enough to require surgery. She’s home now but immobile for 12 weeks. They live in a tiny apartment with two Weims and are poor as church mice. My daughter and I are visiting on Sunday and I would like to take some kind of goodie bag of stuff she’d like to have. She’s 24 and, as previously mentioned, a vegan. Anybody have any good ideas what to put in the bag? (Besides money.)
Vegetables.
Seriously, though, your best bet is probably to ask your son.
Failing that, eggless, milkless (flavorless ;)) chocolate cake, dusted with powdered sugar, is easy to make. Trail mix ought to be fine, as long as there’s no chocolate chips. Edamame comes to mind.
Actually, here’s a list of vegan-safe snacks.
Movies and big fat books. Sellout Woot has an Asus netbook today. If they have wifi, it’s light enough that she should be able to use it in bed. introduce her to the Dope.
StG
Hummus and cut-up veggies to dip in it.
I swear I posted a reply but hamsters must have eaten it.
These are all great ideas! Thanks.
No wifi.
Not sure if you want to put cold and/or frozen items in a “bag”, but my roommate is a vegetarian and he’s addicted to cereal. He’s also lactose intolerant so he drinks soy milk like it’s going out of style. Cereal is expensive and soy milk is twice as much as a gallon of cow’s milk, so I bet she’d appreciate those “luxuries.”
He also really likes vegan frozen pizza. It’s cheese-less.
::makes note: soy milk, pizza::
What about non-edibles??
Easiest thing to do would be to go to the local health-food / coop / vegan grocery store and ask the same question. The skinny girl with the piercings and tattoos would be more than happy to show you all the yummy stuff that she likes.
Oh, definitely books/videos, etc. Lotion is nice. Does she do any sort of knitting or crochet or other craft? Maybe she would like to start?
Actually, I’d stay away from food, or just give a small amount. Even as a vegan, sitting around and eating for 12 weeks whilst being unable to move much is just asking for weight gain, and that’s unlikely to be appreciated even if you think she could use a few extra pounds. Books, craft items, or anything else that would keep her mind and hands busy would be good.
Yeah, I am thinking just a few edibles. She’s not skinny. What would that girl with the tats and piercings like in books and video categories?
I like the lotion idea…maybe some of the aroma therapy stuff?
Poor girl! I’m sure she’ll really appreciate your thoughtfulness.
She will probably be having visitors a lot. Maybe you could get her some non-perishable things that she could easily serve if someone comes over, like tea cookies.
While you’re at Whole Foods (or wherever), pick up some baby wipes for her. She’ll have trouble showering and those will help her feel cleaner.
On the book front–do you have a source for super-cheap/free used books? You could give her a whole stack of miscellaneous books, telling her “read what you like, give away the rest.” That way she won’t feel pressured to read something you’ve specifically picked out for her and you won’t have to worry about finding exactly what she likes. You could scour your own bookshelf and maybe ask other friends to throw some in. (I did this for a friend who had just given birth, and she really appreciated it. Not just the books, but the lack of pressure to read anything in particular.)
Maybe you could pay for upgraded cable service or Netflix for the duration.
If you go with knitting or crocheting, may I suggest that you also include a sheet with information on The Snuggles Project or something similar? Even if she’s not too good at knitting, it doesn’t matter! And inexpensive yarn is actually better for those things than finer yarn. I’ve made several at times when I’ve just wanted some mindless hand work.
Let us know what you decide to do, okay?
I would assume she already has a copy of the Veganomicon. If not, that would be an awesome present.
Here’s a good resource for comfort foods:
Maybe jigsaw puzzles or board games? I imagine she could get pretty bored pretty quickly, and something like Apples to Apples can be tons of fun when you’ve got a friend or two over.
Do you like your son?
No: Beans. Lots of beans.
Yes: Not beans.
Baby Wipes…check!
I don’t think she cooks much but I have given them a couple of vegan cook books.
I just remembered they have a Wii. Maybe a game?
hotflungwok, Bwahahahaha! I like him very much. Not beans.
Thanks everybody. Some great ideas here.
How in the world can one be a vegan and not cook much? I guess that means she lives in NY or LA & has lots of restaurant options. Otherwise, your son must be a saint.
Sorry for the hijack.
Most vegans I know eat a lot of beans, so a crock-pot would be a nice gift, if they don’t have one.
You might also ask your son *why *she’s a vegan, as that might influence your lotion choices. If she’s vegan because she has digestive issues, then any lotion is probably ok. If she’s a vegan because she hates animal cruelty then you need to be more careful about picking out soaps or lotions.
Small dumbells, or other exercise equipment that can be used while sitting could be good. And a back-scratcher-thingie might be a good idea.
A box of nice kleenex is also a nice thing to have, if they are so poor they’ve been buying the cheap stuff. Same for TP.
Nope, Orlando, and there are a surprising number of dining options for vegans here. Saint he’s not, but he’s a good boy.
Devils Grandmother, they are both vegans as a lifesyle choice (nothing of or from anything having a face or a mother). I love the back-scratcher idea.
