What should US liberal do now?

  1. Start talking to the other side and not down at them, refuse to resort to name calling and focus on ideas.

  2. Donate to groups like the ACLU/SPLC/EFF etc to ensure that illegal and unconstitutional policies are challenged.

  3. Get involved in politics, drive the Democrats to select candidates based on ideas vs. purely star power. Make the power base that has built up due to apathy become more responsive to the needs of the people.

  4. Fight for every bit of ground. Write letters, protest and make your voice heard.

  5. Reach out to those who are being targeted by bigoted and racist policies, give them hope and encourage them to join together with you to fight for common goals.

  6. Do not resort to name calling and ad hominem attacks, and be open to having your mind changed when talking to “the other side” Realize that most people are trying to do the right thing. You cannot lose if you have a discussion or debate with someone when you go in being open to having your mind changed. Even if you lose the debate you learned something and that is a personal win. This dramatically reduces the “cost” of having these discussions and will avoid the all to common result of them degrading into poo slinging. If the liberal ideals are morally superior (as I personally believe) there is no reason to throw away chances to gain an ally or to change someones mind by resorting to tactics that harden everyones position.

It’s still shambling around, but you know it’s pining for the fjords when its best leader is a 75 year old man. Let’s be real, liberal agitators aren’t going to awaken a workers’ revolution in the red states. They’re too busy taking pictures of their lunch.

  1. Reach across the divide to politely explain the problem. Use stories to illustrate the problem.

  2. Join the ACLU. (I did). [ website removed ]

  3. Vote

  4. Do not lose hope.

  5. Work for the moment of change.

I doubt 1 and 6 are doable.

You are correct.

Even if every single person on the left suddenly went to their best behavior, and was as nice and polite and respectful of any and all points of the other side, no matter how inflamatory they may find them, it won’t do any good, as it doesn’t matter what is done now. So much is drug up from the past, so often recriminations come from things that happened in the 80’s or even earlier, that it is very unlikely that those on the right will ever let any slight go, no matter how apologetic we are about them, or how far in the past they are.

And this is if the impossible is doable in the first place.

As it seems that anyone on the left is responsible for all utterances of any on the left, if there is just one person who is not respectful enough to the right’s POV, then that person will be used as THE example as to why a reasoned debate can’t be had.

Any time it is attempted to engage one on one with between moderates on opposite sides of the aisle, it seems that you are usually arguing against arguments that you never made, but that some other guy on some other blog made.

I may have misunderstood, but by “now” I thought you meant in the next 18 months or so. But long term, things aren’t that bad fron the Democrats point of view. A whole bunch of prole aren’t going to vote at all. Of the voters, rough number,30 percent on each end are the true believers, who will always vote R or D,not in play. Add another 10 percent to each side who are never R or never D,who are partially in play on the enthusiasm count, they may vote as exprcted,or go third party,or not vote at all.

But it’s the 20 percent in the middle, in about 8 states who decide. And understanding why they voted for Obama and not Hillary.

Do not do this again. If you would like to mention your own choices, (including joining associations), that is permitted. Adding a website where joining can be accomplished is too much like soliciting for membership.

First and foremost… when everybody in your Facebook feed is freaking out over something… step back and watch what the Trump administration is quietly doing.

Case in point - the refugee ban. While everybody was outraging over it, Trump put Bannon on the principal National Security Council and took the joint chiefs out of it. The political takeover of the NSC is truly terrifying. Meanwhile everyone in liberaldom is high-fiving themselves over blocking a small sliver of the Muslim ban.

Don’t get me wrong… it was totally right to oppose that ban. But from this point forward, assume that every time he sparks an outrage, it’s to conceal some greater outrage.

What’s wrong with working to win on the issues if humans are rational? If they are emotional and in large part irrational what’s wrong with positive emotional rhetoric? Calling people who disagree shitlord, deplorable, asshole, and racist isn’t going to work.

I think they actually know this, but they find it too emotionally-satisfying to resist the temptation, even if doing so harms their larger goals.

My recommendation would be to boost Republican statements against Trump (e.g. John McCain), to use “What would Jesus want?” as often as possible, and give clear and reasonable explanations of how bad policy will affect the country and our allies.

As mentioned:
Criticize the president. Don’t attack his supporters.

I really hope people get this through their heads before 2020 rolls around or Trump could very well win a second term.

That’s an interesting observation, and I’ve heard a few talking heads on TV saying more or less the same thing. Definitely something to watch out for-- I don’t think Trump is as stupid as people believe. He is, at heart, a marketing guy and a lot of this is marketing.

He also called Putin and began talks of removing the sanctions for invading the Ukraine.

It seems that he is also talking to Japan and South Korea about pulling out from helping to defend them from North Korea.

Take the amount of donations that the ACLU typically receives in a year. Multiply it by 6. Donate it all in one weekend!!!

Not 2020. 2018.

The Democrats need to do everything they can to take the House and Senate. I know the math says it is near impossible, but the math/polls said that Trump couldn’t be elected. If the rage is strong enough, turnout can overturn expectations.

There are three branches of government.

Its time to rely on the judiciary to prevent the excesses of Trump and a Republican congress. I get the feeling that the constitution is going to get a workout and the ACLU lawyers are going to earn their money over the next 4 years.

I would realize that in this day and age what people see on Youtube videos make a bigger impression than what they see in the lame street media. Look up videos of SJW (social justice warriors) doing and saying crazy things. Also Google “feminist cringe”.
Sure the inauguration day protesters had their fun with their pink hats and vagina costumes but the lingering effect from the videos will always be there.

Also voting for democrats was mentioned but I would also clean house in the DNC.

Look, the DNC spent $1.5 BILLION on Hillarys campaign, and lost. Trump spent half that and won. Heads should roll for whoever ran her campaign and lead the party in 2016.
