What site to download programs without bloatware/virus?

I reinstalled windows 7 on my desktop computer. I did a clean reinstall and i had an issue where trovi got installed. I believe it was because i downloaded many programs in my computer.
Example, i would download itunes, openoffice, winamp, vlc player, adobe flash player, winrar etc and many time it ask if you want to install other thing like toolbar etc. I make sure for those things to leave it unchecked. But how do i know if say vlc player, which ones i could uncheck so i dont have bloatware and it wouldn’t have any problems?
Someone tells me never download these programs from cnetdownload. Is that true? They said it has lot of bloatware/adware with it and i always used that site to download it. I was told download directly at site or filehippo. So only use these 2 sites?
Does anyone know if trovi is caused by winamp? I downloaded all those programs and really want to know what caused trovi to happen. I did remove it but im not sure if i did it correctly however so not sure if i still have the lagging on computer but it does feel slower than before i installed those programs.
Very frustrating to download programs like that, itunes, skype etc and then have bloatware.
Can someone here who reinstall their computers give me advice on best way to install these programs without getting any bloatware? There is nothing worst than resinstalling computer then having this stuff and thus browser would be really slow.

Download everything, that you can, directly from it’s own website and just pay really close attention to what comes with it. Sometimes you have to uncheck the box so you don’t get all the extra crap, sometimes you have to check the box so you don’t get all the extra crap.

Also, if you get things from cnet, you have to be careful since it usually takes few clicks and then waiting a few seconds for a box to pop up, but when you get to the part where you have to wait, there’s usually a very similar looking program sitting there and it looks like you’re supposed to click on it, but you’re not, if you read it it says ‘your download will begin in a few seconds’ (and make sure a bar didn’t pop up to say it was blocked), if you just keep clicking along you’ll end up with the wrong program and probably all kinds of garbage with it…it happens to the best of us.

Not sure if this site will do quite what you ask, but it’s worth a try. I believe it’s safe in itself, anyway.

Golden rule: never never never download software from CNET/Download.com, which is the dominant site. The download process is a minefield of bloatware. Most trustworthy site I’ve found is MajorGeeks. There you’ll get the software you want and nothing else.

CNET has been viciously pushing its installer wrapper bloatware for years now. It is an entirely unreliable site for downloading anything.

That being said, they used to have (in a little link to the left) a link called “Direct Download Link”. That one shouldn’t have any CNET wrapped bloatware. I don’t bother visiting that site at all anymore, as they are just nasty.

I agree - these toolbars etc gat added when we click through the windows without reading and checking/unchecking the boxes.

Best place to get software from is the owners site, but if it’s free, you can guarantee that they will want you to take some stuff that generates income for them.

Yes i found out recently cnet is horrible for it but didnt know about it earlier.

Yes i do follow the steps to see what to check and uncheck if it says you want this ofter software or not.

However many times theres are situations wher im not sure if i should uncheck other boxes or not b/c it might make the program not work.

Example vlc player. How do i know which boxes to uncheck? It say you want to use this default file for audio and video, those i can click yes but theres many other boxes there that im not sure of.

What about filehippo? someone suggested that one?

But if i did download from cnet, is it easy to remove the bloatware? The thing is i have that trovi installed into my chrome and i did the stepes to remove it but im not sure if it removed 100 percent b/c first off

st step it says remove it in programs but its not there. Also in adw-aware after i click scan, it does scan it and then it shows pending…
I waited for like 1 hour and nothing happened so i clicked clean then it restarted computer.
Thus i removed trovi from google settings but i like to know if its fully removed.

Seconding ninite, linked to by **GuanoLad **but apparently not noticed. You can use it to download VLC (among many other typical programs), and it will install it for you while making sure you don’t get all the junk installed.

I don’t think trovi is listed as “trovi” in add/remove programs. It’s called like “search lock” or something. Just order your add/remove programs list by “date installed” and you will see what you installed most recently. Uninstall whatever you don’t remember installing.

Thirding this recommendation. It has most of the freeware you might want, and makes installing the whole lot much, much less painful. I routinely use it every time I want to reinstall things, and the best part is that you can run the installer later, and it’ll update them all to the latest version. Really useful site. Never had any malware that I’m aware of coming from it.

I have had very good luck getting files from filehippo.com.

As always, pay attention when installing any program and make sure you do NOT agree to them installing extra programs along with your requested program.
