“Austin” these days.

The song that first came to my mind is a song performed by the band I’m in. One of our band’s friend’s dad was killed in a car accident one night, and we were all really close to him. This song was written partly in dedication to him, and partly as a symbol of companionship with our friend.
I have a url to the song here if you want to hear it. (Note: It’s punk).

Moggy, you don’t, like, spend a lot of time or anything listening to the radio do you?
Imagine
UniversalGuy, I have been listening to music since I was a wee’un. I grew up listening to “classic rock” due to my parents, then I played the violin and sang in a choir, thus becoming exposed to classical and choral music. I also performed in musicals in high school, studied opera in college, and sang in an early music ensemble. I love 80s music- I was a total New Wave chick with the funky hair and all!
Music has always been a big part of my life. I have used music as an escape and as a comfort. I can “get lost” in a song. I think it’s safe to say that music has even saved my life at times. I LOVE MUSIC. I would much rather have music playing in the background than the tv. Unfortunately, I have become out of touch with popular music these days, but I’m hoping that will change since I’ve gotten a car (and the radio is usually on!).
Somebody else who uses that word!!! I thought my grandma and I were the only ones!
There are a lot of songs out there that I’m just totally in love with, and everytime I hear them I get adreneline rushes just because I think they’re so good …
Scenes From an Italian Restaurant by Billy Joel - Roundabout by Yes - Hey Jude by the Beatles … These are just a few that spring immediately to mind.
There is one song that is a recent hit, that brings me to tears everytime … Drops of Jupiter by Train. The way I interpret the song reminds me a lot of what I’m going through right now – certain lines just ring so true for me that it’s hard to not be affected.
E.g. - “… a story 'bout a man who was too afraid to fly so he never did land.”
Meanwhile the love object of the song is off “finding” herself.
I’m getting a little vklempt just typing this.
**Baba O’Riley ** by the Who. The phrase “teenage wasteland” was used in describing the Bergenfield, NJ suicides in the late 1980’s. I was reading about it when I heard the song and I just lost it and started to cry.
I also found out just on Friday that a close friend of my just recently finished recovering from a suicide attempt. I didn’t really make the connection until thinking about this post. Woah.
I, I think I’m just going to end this post with that.
Songs that matter to me:
Perfect Circle by REM
A Hard Rain’s A-Gonna Fall by Dylan
California, Dylan again. Especially this part:
San Francisco’s fine,
You sure get lots of sun.
San Francisco is fine.
You sure get lots of sun.
But I’m used to four seasons,
California’s got but one.
Those that know me will know why.
Forever Young, again, Dylan. Gives me chills. My friend’s dad (who we hung out with often, she had the “cool” parents) was the hugest Dylan fan and this was his favorite. He died suddenly in January, and my fondest memory of him is hanging out the night before I left for California and he played it on guitar and sang it.
I could name a bazillion more Dylan songs, but I’ll stop.
Bridge Over Troubled Waters by Simon and Garfunkle
Winter by Tori Amos
New England by Billy Bragg
Rudy Can’t Fail by The Clash, in a good way. Makes me smile.
Pictures of Matchstick Men by Camper makes me smile too. Good old memories.
Blackbird by the Beatles
I’ll Stand By You by the Pretenders. Story of my life.
My Happiness by Powderfinger. Reminds me of a particular friend I hurt.
Anything by S.U.N. Project, Astral Projection, Infected Mushroom… that makes me wanna dance and makes me feel warm and fuzzy.
there is this music video for a clip from an anime movie called memories …
it is a phantom of the opera song done techno style … hearing the song makes me quiver … I get so high energy and excited about life when I hear it … if I need to gear myself up for a big project or something difficult, I listen to this song ! (watching hte video gets me going 3 times as much)
odd … but I can deal with it.
Whenever I hear the song ‘SOMETHING INSIDE SO STRONG’ I get all emotional and reminisive. Possibly my favourite song of all time.
BTW does anyone know where I can get hold of it on MP3? it would make me very happy as im thinking of it now
Two of my favourite songs (although I’ve only heard the Joy Division original of Love Will Tear Us Apart).

Only one song really makes me cry: “Cats in the Cradle” : Harry Chapin
i’m very easily manipulated by music, so the songs that can make me cry are myriad. a few:
lightning crashes by live
** precious** by annie lennox
** silent night/7:00 news** by simon and garfunkle
the wind that shakes the corn by the irish rovers
** luka** and the queen and the soldier by suzanne vega
and i literally cannot listen the me and a gun by tori amos. i can’t even hear the opening word of that song. i saw her perform it live in concert, the only time i’ve ever listened to it, and the boy i was with had to take me home.
songs that make me happy/energetic/powereful
turbo lover by judas priest-- guaranteed to add 15 mph to my odometer
baby got back by sir mix-a-lot
young and beautiful by annie lennox
if i had $1000000 by the barenaked ladies
excitable boy and werewolves of london by warren zevon
american girl, last dance with mary jane, and i won’t back down by tjom petty and the heartbreakers. in fact, damned near anything by them is guaranteed to have my singing full voice in the car.
I can’t believe it, normally when I go to post on a thread like this, my idea is stripped to the bones and leaves me feeling like a total idiot and completely unoriginal thinker.
But the song that gets me every single time is “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald” by Gordon Lightfoot. I always felt that this song was one of the most powerful folk-type singer-songwriter numbers to come out of that era. Growing up in the 70’s in the Great Lakes Region, it really made it’s mark on me and continues to haunt me to this day.
[sub]** As a runner-up, “$1,000 Wedding” by Gram Parsons and then beautifully remade by Evan Dando & Julianna Hatfield is a great funeral song that no one with a soul can resist. It will melt you.[/sub]**
Tears in Heaven by Eric Clapton.
The first time I heard it was while I was driving home from the maternity hospital, we had just lost our second baby.
It doesn’t make me actually sad anymore, but I still can’t hear it without filling up with tears.
I was going to second mmmiiikkkeee on Amazing Grace, but will happily third you.
Amazing Grace gets played at every funeral in my family – hey, Scottish heritage, what can I say.
('Course, technically, its not a Scottish song… but appears to have been firmly adopted there).
This 2-part song was (or wasn’t) performed live by both C.Santana & J. Hendrix. A remake (without J. Hendrix) is on C. Santana’s record ‘Spirits Dancing In The Flesh’.
The song’s title is:
Peace On Earth Mother Earth, Third Stone From The Sun.
