Puccini’s opera, Turandot. A snippet from the first act, I think, but as I’m writing this, the second act is getting in my head. Before long I’ll be humming “Nessun dorma,” and that’ll probably last the rest of the day.
This was inspired after reading a thread in GQ about the pronunciation of Peking/Beijing (actually, the OP was about Calcutta, but it soon expanded to the pronunciation of other city names). For some reason, I thought of the Italian pronunciation “Pekino” (which for all I know is something different nowadays), and then Puccini’s music came flooding across my brain.
