What song is this? (Very limited information)

There’s an old R&B or funk song from the 60s or 70s that has a call and response that my husband and I agree starts: Hola, hola hey (hola, hola hey) but we disagree and what the second part sounds like. To him it’s : rolley, rolley, rolley peice of pork-- yum! and to me it sounds more like: rolley, poley, poley cockatiel now!

Neither of us is right, I don’t think, but we both cannot remember what song this call and response bit belongs to. Can you help us out here?

Is it Cab Calloway’s Minnie the Moocher? It was featured in the Blues Brothers, which is where you would likely know it from.

Nope, not Minnie the Moocher. It was most definitely a soul, funk, R&B song that played on the radio. Probably around the same time that Fight The Power was popular because it may have been a protest song.

I can’t help you but I’m really really hoping it’s rolley, poley, poley cockatiel.

I should mention that it probably isn’t real words. That’s just what it sounds like he’s saying.

I would guess that is something along the lines of Ole ole ole.

olay ola olay ola

“Hola” is pronounced ola, if you’re Puerto Rican and saying “Hello”. Which is what I meant by Hola, hola hey.

N/M.

The song is by Ripple. It’s called “I Don’t Know What It Is, But It Sure Is Funky.”

Sounds like it.

Yay! That’s it! I thought I was gonna lose my mind over it. Thank you Asovian.

I’m usually useless either through lack of knowledge or lack of timeliness in these sorts of threads, so I’m really pleased I could contribute.

Before I’d even finished reading your first sentence, I said, “Oh, that’s Rollin’ With Kid 'N Play!” I posted that like a dumbass, all proud of myself, then re-read your OP and realized that a 1989 rap song did not exactly fit what you asked for. Fortunately, Kid N’ Play had sampled your song, so I was able to track down the answer anyway. And now I have a new song that I like, thanks to you!

Very impressive, Asimovian

It’s “Rolley, rolley, rolley, Chick-a-boom, now.” “Chick-a-boom” is a pretty popular refrain in music, and there are several songs of that title.

The only way I can conceive either of those interpretations out of “chick-a-boom” is y’all must have been listening to it on AM radios…

Don’t ya jes love it?

We weren’t listening to it, we were remembering it. And remembering it incompletely.

Tsh. It would have been ten times funkier if they had thrown a “cockatiel now!” in there. Ripple would have gone on to mega-platinum status and would be remembered as one of the giants of the 1970’s ;).

I have had Kid 'N Play stuck in my head since yesterday. Now I feel old.

Imagine how me and my husband feel. The song we were remembering is, like, 30 years older than the one you were remembering.

You know what its like, you half remember something like this, turns out to be wrong but I couldn’t put my finger on it.

Anyhow, even though its not the OP’s song, I shall still post the link because I think you deserve to hear the original because its so full of summer, and October/November in the UK really needs some sunshine, so there!
