I hate to admit this but, I do a lot of weekend D-Jing at wedding receptions and high school reunions. Now I know where all those freaking wierd requests come from and, have to ask. If you KNOW that no one else will know these off the beaten path tunes then why the heck do you so often request them?
I love the Safety Dance by Men Without Hats but, you really need an eighties inclined group to play it successfully. Along with a lot of the other songs mentioned in that era but, not all of them.
My next question is why do you not dance to these requests when the DJ finally gets them played? Sure you’ll be the only one on the floor but, why care? You obviously are a person of enlightenment. Show everyone what they are missing!
I really get my shorts frosted over requests that get no dancers. If you have the inclination to rip on the DJ because he ain’t playing anything decent then at least have the courtesy of showing him you really did want that song. Instead of proving him right about how bad a request it was.
Sorry to sound so dissapointed in the clan here but, take last night for instance. (A few tunes that never fail, failed miserably).
“Mustang Sally” Wilson Pickett
“Brown Eyed Girl” Van Morrison
“Y.M.C.A.” Village People (10 people out of 275)
“Complicated” Avril Lavigne
“I Will Survive” Gloria Gaynor
Of course, I often take note of the need to be original at each reception and keep from playing the same old-same old tunes but, I was overwhelmed by these requests. All these did great:
“Electric Boogie” Marcia Griffiths
“Hot Hot Hot” Buster Poindexter
“Macarena” Los Del Rio
“Duck Dance” and “Hokie Pokie” Oh yes I did play these two and got nearly the entire floor filled with young and old.
Take note, I usually don’t bitch about any slow songs because very few people really know how to dance to 'em anyway. most couples just shuffle away and have a great time together.
So, don’t be angry at the DJ for playing the same old worn out, overplayed and undeserving songs at your friends reception. You asked for it!
Hmmm, maybe I should’ve pitted this one
