What super-hero team would you want to be a member of?

Did anybody read the OP? You’re supposed to align yourself with a team capable of keeping Darkseid or Thanos off your ass for an entire year!

The only clear choice is joining the Jack Hawkmoor-led Authority of the Millar/Quitely era. I’d want a damned vicious superteam to have my back.

Oh, a Thanos-proof group.

Great Lakes Avengers (or are they GLX now?)

Any group with Squirrel Girl is undefeatable, although there is no guarantee that any other given member of the team will survive. Heck, even Monkey Joe is gone…

I’m more partial to the Ellis/Hitch Authority with Jenny Sparks, myself. Nobody, Millar included, ever recaptured the magic and “widescreen action” of those first 12 issues.

True, but they had their moments. Remember when Quantum Jenny cut off the Giant-Man analogue at the knees? I also thought that the rogue doctor, replacement Authority members, the uber-powered Seth and Dr. Krigstein and his analogues (esp. the Avengers) all made much more interesting villains than most of the villains of the Ellis/Hitch run – although the Gamorra Islands clones in the first story arc were pretty sweet.

I was wondering that myself.

Well, then it has to be just barely pre-disassembled Avengers. Loads of Eternals, gods, demi gods, and cosmic powerhouses.

I’m going to go with the Justice League, any version except the Detroit era.

I’m an X-men kind of guy.

Invisibles.

Yeah, OK, they’re not superheroes. Sod off.

Legion, mid-late 70s, when all the members dressed like porn stars.

West Coast Avengers, Englehart era, when Tigra was spreading 'em for anything with a pulse and a prostate.

If I remember my Marvel continuity right, Thanos has the freakin’ Reality Gem. That’s right, one of the Infinity Gems. He can make and unmake matter at whim. The only way I’m touching the Marvel universe is if I can join the Infinity Watch, where the people with the other five can keep him away from me.

I don’t read much DC, but I understand that Darkseid has repeated problems with New Genesis. They’d probably be good people to run to.

. . . I’m already a member. It has its ups and downs.

Eve, if you have to keep a Thanos or Darkseid class entity off your back for a year, and your only known powers are Jewish Humour, Literary Criticism and Encyclopædic Knowledge of Golden-Era Movie Divas, shouldn’t you be hanging out with a more heavyweight team?

It’s a little-known fact that the classic routines of the Borsht Circuit comics puts Thanos in stitches. He’s been known to need a long lie-down after hearing “take my wife, please!”

And Darkseid is fascinated by Marlena Deitrich. Eve could have him out of the fight for hours just telling him anecdotes. Play him an original Marlena recording of “Whew Hef Aww the Fwowews Gun?” and he’d toss Granny Goodness off a tower for you.

Then there’s your answer, Eve. You need to team up with jayjay, who evidently has the tag skill Obscure Vulnerabilities of Galactic-Class Megavillains.

I’d go with the Avengers. Not only do they have the power to cover for my cowardly ass, they also have a stipend and a place to live.

In the 1980s, it was $52,000/yr. It has to be at least in the 70’s by now. 70,000 for hanging out with Captain America! Plus, you get to live in a mansion in Manhattan! That’s posh real estate.

Dude, they went bust financially.

People around here are picking the 30th Century, so I’ll go with the PRE-Bust Avengers.

Hm. How about the Young Heroes (From Young Heroes in Love, DC, ca 2000)
Varying power levels, always interesting plot twists, and more nookie than you could shake a stick at. Plus, really cool road trips.

Do I have to pick only one? I can’t, so here goes:

  1. Levitz / Giffen LSH, especially around the time they first took on Darkseid, or
  2. Giffen / DeMatteis Justice League, towards the beginning. Considering who we are supposed to be taking on, I want the Martian Manhunter, Captain Marvel, and Doctor Fate on my team, or
  3. Giffen / DeMatteis / Maguire Defenders, provided we can get the Silver Surfer off the beach.
