ohh, HideoHo! a “Straight Dope Counterstrike” server! that would be, and i am sure there are a number right here with me, who consider that “Fricken awesome!”.
hmm, maybe a “straight dope” clan. probably be a problem, considering that there already is a <[sd]> clan…
When someone whines the only thing I do in response is shoot them while they are talking. Other than that I might pull out a crappy weapon and start killing them with it.
Its not cheap when people can easily go down there and frag her because she has no guns.
I’ll be damned if it’s not cheap. There’s no strategy in it at all except in finding where the respawn points are. And keep in mind there wasn’t a single respawn points above her. So she could stay alive almost all day by simply denying other people any chance at a fair game -by effectively denying them the chance to play the game at all.
If I had a ten bucks on the line, I might follow a similar strategy, but I don’t think playing like that is particularly fair or fun.
They could have changed the map and removed the tripmines. It was simple. Shit, they could have asked me to do it for them, and I willingly would have? Why? Because I would rather have fun playing with my friends than not.
They could have set up firm rules. They could have said “No mining the respawn points.” They did not. Every day, play would start, and no one would say “no mining the respawn points”. Hell, they liked having no “rules of honor” - all except one guy. Why should I be held to rules made up on the spot ex post facto when a game goes against someone? Good Goddess, I sure hope you don’t do that yourself when you play - because that, my friend, is cheating.
So…we have a game, where laser tripmines are placed down by the respawn points, there are no rules saying I can’t use them to mine the respawn points, no one makes any effort after days of playing the same map to remove the tripmines…or move the freaking respawn points or adjust the walls so mines can’t be laid, yet somehow I’m the one who’s acting cheap? What the fuck kind of logic is that?
I don’t know if you play many multiplayer games or not, but here’s a tip - there is no code of honor other than what you and your friends agree upon. Period. You break the rules you set up with your friends, you’re an ass. You don’t break the rules, and don’t utilize game cheats, and anything is fair game.
In fairness, I always had the pistol. But I got fragged more than my fair share of times. There were a small number of mines, and once they blew, I had to wait for more, and run, duck, evade, lead people into other people, pop up out of a manhole, run across the free-fire zone and duck down another. But when someone came down after me, and all I had was the pistol…it got hard. Real hard. One game, they thought they would all pay me back. ALL the other players (all 6 of them) decided to do nothing but kill me. They thought it would demoralize me. They thought it would make me bawl “Not fair!”
But I didn’t. Why? Because I knew something our friend Eternal didn’t - there were no rules that kept them from ganging up on me. They thought they were demoralizing me, well, they were wrong. I laughed openly at the comic ways I was fragged, and how I would get them to accidentally frag each other. Eventually, human nature won out, and they went back to a free-for-all. And the Empress of the Underworld returned, the mines were laid, and the body count rose…
It’s all part of the game, and it’s all just a game. No point in getting so upset about people that play by the agreed-upon rules, and who never use game cheats to rise above the others in any way.
As far as the llamas, I hear you. That’s really the entire reason I joined the TFC clan scene. I was one of those people for the longest time that pretty much made fun of clans. I mean, who would get that serious about a video game?
Well, I subsequently ate my words when I realized that in order to get challenging competition, in a fun environment… this is the route I had to take.
I love clan matches now, they are the pinnacle of all games IMO. The last patch of Half-Life added a “TV” option… some of the forum goers here should watch some matches, I have watched a couple, and it is really cool to watch a well organized team operate… very cool way for good talent to get together.
Pirates, Vikings, and Knights. Probably the best mod I’ve come across, not many servers though :(. You can go find it at PlanetHalflife if you wanna play. I love the pirate team, but everyone always tell me they take no skill… Im quite confused, if they take no skill, why did the mod devs MAKE them require no skil to play?
I always find it funny when some guy calls me a “n00b” right after I gun him down along with two of his teammates. I get to read things like the aforementioned “n00b” and “SG LAMER.” Yeah, I use the shotgun when you come right up to me. Do I have to use a fucking slingshot, just so that little twits like you will accept that you were killed fairly?
Thanks all for reinforcing my opinion that playing any game without being within arm’s reach of the other players is “a bad thing.”
The incredibly juvenile and hostile behavior the anonymity of online gamning evokes is nullified when the little butt-nugget is sitting right in front of you.
Somehow, the ability to knock somebody’s teeth down their throat should they richly deserve it brings out their better behavior.
I hope I didn’t reinforce your idea that “remote” gaming is a “bad thing”.
In my experience, the only people that complain about stuff like this, just plain suck. I don’t waste my time talking to them about it, I just keep playing. Somehow it always works out at the end where I have a better score than said whiner.
Which reminds me of a funny story actually. The other day a guy was bitching that I was killing him with a rocket launcher too easily (Solja for TFC)… so I said: “Ok, tell me what class you want me to be… we’ll go through every class and after I kill you with each one, then can I use the class that I want?”
To make a long story short, I killed him with every class… turns out his problem wasn’t me… it was HIM.
That was one of the few times I let one of these guys get the best of me… like I said before, I usually just keep playing.
Anthracite, your coworkers must be the tamest beings on the face of the earth for thinking mining respawns is fair play. At any rate, just because there was no rule against it doesn’t mean you should do it, considering it’s not very sporting.
I’m not going to argue sporting. I obeyed all the rules that were set up every game. There are some that say intentional fouling in the final minutes of basketball is not “sporting” - I sure as hell do - but, it’s not violating the rules such that it can be stopped. Or what about spiking the ball to get a time-out in football? That’s not very sporting either, and yet…it’s in the rules that you can do it. Or, to be more exact, there is not a rule against it.
What you are trying to do, it seems, is hold me to some sort of standard of personal honor you yourself hold for all occasions. I do have similar standards, but I do not hold them in a game where it is agreed upon that there are “no rules”. What other things would you object to? No shooting in the back? No shooting someone who is unarmed? No sniping? (I know gamers that ban long-distance sniping, because it is “unfair”, yet for some odd reason leave the sniper rifle in the game) There are potentially a lot of things that one might object to.
And yes, we did play numerous other maps, several with no laser tripmines at all, or any chance to use them. And I had just as much fun either way.
Furthermore, why would someone bitch about something that is so easy to overcome? If you see a laser trip mine, you simply pull out your 9mm, and shoot it… and it blows up. How simple is that?
People just bitch because they were too stupid to look for an obvious trap.
Sure, I get annoyed when I’m playing 2fort, and there are 5 snipers on the other deck. It is frustrating walking out in the open and instantly getting popped… but when I DO get through, I just make them wish they never chose that class in the first place. Spam the sniper deck, use the thin texture exploit, guard their respawn, do whatever it takes to make them wish they had never picked that class. More times than not, they change their tactic(s).
Err…well, in fairness, when you mine the respawn points they are dead before they can move. They have no chance. Also, even if the mines are really close, the tripmines had a powerful area of effect. One thing that I did a couple times was “fence” the respawn points in. This gave a horrible dilemna to those who respawned: wait until someone else killed them, try to get through the maze of lasers (which never worked), or shoot the mines (which would kill them too). So…in fairness, there really was no chance for them.
[sub]Yes, I fragged myself several times by respawning in my own trap.[/sub]
my remark about “what are ya nuts?” wasnt restricted to fps’s, there are dozens if not hundreds of online games, the fps market holds the majority but there are many that arent fps type games, everquest (I played this game their cs sucks ass), anarchy online, dark age of camalot, to name a few.
and about my attitude? well I aint lyin and I aint talkin smack. I am damn good at that game, and im pretty good a most fps type games in general, to be honest though there are few things I like better than losing to someone better than myself. its an opportuninty to learn and take what you learn and apply it in whatever way you can, not just the same way you saw it used.
I play de_dust on CS almost exclusively, so I am very good at the map. I grabbed an AWM and went to the tunnel. Some guys came running through and I nailed one. Then another. Then two more. These idiots didn’t know that when you hear a tank cannon go off and one of your temmates is down, you get the hell into cover instead of standing in the open with your AK.
Another funny thing is when they complain about my TMP ownage. One of the most crappiest guns is a delicate tool in my hands, so obviously I must be autoaiming
We had a TFC clan for a while with the tag S~D, but that kinda petered out. If you want to do something like this, start a thread in MPSIMS. I’m game for it!
“And every one of them seems to be filled to the brim with 14 year old boys who act like they’re auditioning for a Mountain Dew commercial. No thanks”
I guess my leetness doesnt stop at tribes, it continues to my amazing ability to ignore 14yr old moutain dew wanna bees.
it aint that hard, I played a lot of eq for awhile, made some really great friends, mature, polite, occasionally crude as hell, but most important of all cool people. sure you sometimes have to deal with retards but hey thats life. theres just something cool about doing something online with a group of people that you cant possibly do alone. talking to people from belfast, georgia, and places near and far. hell I grouped with a pair of japanese girls for a while, that was crazy with bad english flying around all over the place, but it was fun. a hell of a lot funner than any single player game I have ever come across.
find some friends, get a good chat program like battle com and it gets even better, hell with battle com your group of friends can stop getting spanked by the 14yr olds and start kicking some ass.
I am just more socially inclined perhaps? I know for sure that single player games bore the fuck outta me, even when they are cool as hell. nothing like another human for an opponent.
