I woke up, booted up my computer and recieve a weird error, saying I can’t boot from CD, I don’t know what this means since my BIOS is set to boot from HD and floppy before trying CD, so I rebooted. This time it boots up all the way to windows, I’m thinking it was some fluke error at this point, til I get to the login screen, that’s when it gets really weird.
There are two logins, NEWUSER (haven’t got around to deleting it yet) and Ryle. I try to click on either of them and it prompts me for a password (which has never happened since I have no password) and I leave it blank and hit the button. It says it can’t log into windows due to a catastrophic media failure or corrupted disk structure.
What the hell?
So I reboot, go into my BIOS and check everything out, its running at normal tempature, everything sounds normal, check the boot order…
My HD is not there. It’s not showing up at all, how the hell did I boot to windows if my HD isn’t showing up, with a non-win CD in the CD-Drive?
This is the weirdest error I have ever had, and I really would like to avoid it in the future, or at least figure out what happens and find out if the data is recoverable.
I’m running WinXP Pro by the way, never had a hard drive problem, and it has about half the space free, this hard drive is only a couple months old, so it shouldn’t be age. It’s formated in NTFS too.
I’m going to pick up a new hard drive from Costco tomorrow and get to the boring task of reinstalling everything. There’s a good 4-5 hours of wasted time.
