Really? That’s definitely some useful information. I’d love some of those names.
Check your email.
Ooh, me too. Seriously, this is the thing to do. After spending years hunting conventions for that last issue of ROM or Crystar I needed I can probably zip through 25 boxes in an hour or two and give you a good idea of which boxes are junk to be listed on eBay for $15 and which are worth spending the time to sort them before sale. I assme most other comics fans could do the same. See if you can find someone near you to do this in exchange for some of the comics. That’s probably a much more efficient way to get everything sorted.

I’m finding myself wishing I lived in the DC area. Unfortunatley, I’m in MA. When I get home from work though, I’ll check out what Uvula Donor sent me. If I can get someone else to do this for me, I’ll be really happy.
Thanks to all you guys for your help. If your suggestions save me months of work, I’ll be forever grateful.
I’m not sure where you live, congodwarf, but I guarantee you that there are a lot of people on this board (myself included) that would LOVE to come help sort the comics for free (perhaps reading one every once in a while).
I think you’re getting good advice here…but if you do offer to sell/give away books on this board, once you’re done with that, you should probably just donate the rest…any leftovers wouldn’t get a thing on Ebay.
Good luck, and I wish I had your problem…uh…about the comics, not the BIL.
I’m actually getting really good at ignoring the BIL. I love my future in-laws but I don’t approve of how they coddle him. I figure that my fiancee have an agreement that if his brother moves back in - I’m moving out. I can pretty much rest assured that he’s not moving back in so it has become much easier to just ignore him and be happy.
I’ve never been a comic book person but I did catch myself looking at a few yesterday. The 1993 and 1994 Marvel Swimsuit editions made me laugh.
Any *Love and Rockets * or Mr. X ?
I lost my collection during a bad patch in the early 90’s and never went back to collecting. Those are all I miss. Oh, and Grimjack.
So much to do, so little time. -Mr. X
I might as well put a request in for any Legion of Super-Heroes (DC). I’ve been looking for a way to get caught up on that series for a while, but it’s just too big.
congodwarf, first question - are these comics actually in storage bags? Or just loose in those boxes?
Secondly, if you find any Japanese imports, espcially by Rumiko Takahashi, I’ll be more than glad to take them off your hands, and pay shipping.
raises hand that’d be me.
I’m in China, right now. They don’t have comic books in China, for the most part, so anything you can spare, please do send it my way. I keep thinking I need to get an English-language library started out here as a resource for the teachers, at least, but I’m sure comic books would help. They certainly helped me. I learned the better part of my vocabulary from them, which is why I can still fit the word “snikt” into conversation, I wot.
But yeah. Xmen, Fantastic Four, some good DC…anything at all you can spare would be greatly appreciated. hey, and you’d be helping with English fluency abroad!

If you find Detective Comics #27 I’ll give you $10 for it.
Seriously, you are wasting your time. How much do you get paid? Is it worth 40-80 hours to sort boxes and boxes of low-value junk?
I reccomend putting an ad in the paper and let your local comic-collectors come over, give you an estimate and take whatever they offer you.
Look at it this way, let’s say that it takes you about 10 hours of sorting to find one issue worth $10 (if you’re lucky) so you’ve just made one dollar/per hour.
Let someone else pay you to haul away your junk.
Unless you’re having fun, then, what the hell.
Sincerely,
a former comics junkie.
Let’s see…
Many of the books are loose in the boxes but many are also in bags. Of the ones in bags, I’d say about 3/4 of them even have those backing board thingies in the bags.
Let’s do some quick math. I’ve finished typing up a list of about 60 comics. That only covers about 1/5 of a box. So, each box probably holds around 300 comics. There are 23 boxes. That’s… 6900 comics!!! Holy Crap! I grossly underestimated how many I was dealing with here. I thought each box only held about 100 comics. Wow. I’d have to say, even if I only got $1 for each book, that would more than pay back BIL’s debts to the family, not to mention his truck driving school loans.
I’m actually not being paid for this. I have no desire to keep any money which might be made off this. They’re not my comics and I’m not the one who has been collecting them for many years. Also, he doesn’t owe me any money.
Organizing things is the only thing that makes me seem like an OCD sufferer. I love things to be in order, preferably with a nice spreadsheet detailing that order. So, I don’t really mind doing this. It’s keeping my hands busy. Bored hands lead to me overeating and/or smoking. So, this is a good thing.
I’m trying to talk to BIL but he works strange hours so it’s iffy when I’ll get a chance to ask him what he wants to keep. Maybe this weekend. Things should go faster once I talk to him because I can make his pile and the get rid of pile. I don’t feel the need to categorize his pile (yet) so it will reduce my workload.
Believe it or not, I actually do have a full time job and I’m a part time student. I’m not going to be spending 10 hours a day sorting comics.
<<I’d have to say, even if I only got $1 for each book>>
You won’t. Sorry to rain in your parade, but it’s better to know ahead of time.

Don’t worry, I know. I may not collect them but I know enough to know that it would take me years to sell them all and most aren’t even worth that. I’m really not expecting to make more than a $100. Most likely, not even that much. BIL will probably want to keep anything that might actually be worth something. It’s just wishful thinking.
I’d be interested in a list too, especially if you have any of the last few issues of Marvel’s G.I. Joe series from the early '90s. (Around #150-155.)
[QUOTE=congodwarf]
. The largest pile is graphic novels. They are mostly my fiancee’s so he’ll have to deal with them. QUOTE]
If you have any Ranma 1/2 that he doesn’t want, I’ll gladly take them off your hands. Or any other graphic novels, really.
You will be lucky to get $10 per box.
really, anything 1996-onward is just too common to bother with.
and typing up a list of every book is wasting your time, no one will care to read it.
I’d give 'em away to a shelter or a school or something.
Or… let the neighborhood kids have 'em (after you’ve cleared out the adult comics)
Ok maybe someone will want to read your list. :o

I don’t think they’re all that recent. The first two boxes were from '93-'96. I still have 23 more boxes to go.
Oh, wait a minute - there’s 25 boxes. I forgot that I had two in the house and 23 in the garage.
I don’t think he’s been collecting much over the last 5 or 6 years either. Kids and marriage seem to get in the way of things like that - especially when your wife doesn’t seem to like comics being in the house.
Anything Superman, I’d be happy to take! I’ll even come down and help with the sorting!!!
Good luck with the sorting, I don’t have nearly that collection, but I know when I go through my set of superman comics, it takes me a few hours… and that’s just one box (small storage box).
