What the hell is this Latin percussion instrument called?

I saw a Latin jazz trio last night, as the last concert I have to see and write a report on for my History of Jazz class. It was definitely not worth the drive to Bonita, but damnit, I’m going to write my report and get my credit.

This is really bugging me, though: the singer occasionally used a (presumably, though not necessarily, Mexican) percussion instrument consisting of a cylinder about the same width and twice the length of a Campbell’s soup can, with something inside that shakes and rattles. The thing is played by shaking it rhythmically.

What the hell is this thing called? Anyone?

Was it a ganzá, perhaps?

It certainly seems like it. Thanks! (In one post, too!)

[Elzar] BAM! [/E]

BTW, is it just me or have you been gone for a li’l while?

I’ve been pretty busy, new(ish - started back in May) job and all. Lots of training, labour, and business trips. I’ve been reading, though. 'sup, fetus?

fetus? Who’s that?
