What the hell is wrong with people? (warning: cat cruelty)

I didn’t post the story of the 12-year-old serial killer in training in the Pit last week, because I wanted to focus on the bravery of the 9-year-old that stood up to him and tried to save a kitten’s life.

This one…I just don’t have words. What the hell has to be broken in somebody’s brain to make them think this is an acceptable thing to do? And in front of her 5- and 8-year-old kids…even encouraging them to help.

I genuinely hope I never come across anything like this. I’m a nonviolent person–a wuss, really. But I don’t think I’d be capable of stopping myself from trying to get this baseball bat away from this…person (and I use that term loosely) and showing her the proper use of it. They’d probably arrest me.

Here’s the article, but cat lovers be warned.

One day she will apply for a job. Her potential employer will enter her name in a search engine.

She looks slow.

She looks baked. And I hope **kayaker **is wrong–I hope she never has the chance to apply for a job because her sadistic ass is in jail until she’s too old to be able to get one.

And yeah, I know they can’t put her away that long for killing a “mere” kitten, so I do hope that those Google entries follow her for the rest of her miserable life.

I also hope they take her kids away from her (including the baby she hasn’t had yet) and place them with caring people who might be able to undo what she’s already done to them so at least there might be hope that they won’t follow in her pathetic footsteps.

My wife and I are against the death penalty. We are also massive animal lovers; we would both happily pick up a baseball bat if the Code of Hammurabi was still in effect.

Emphasis added to the key point. Most people behave in a manner consistent with existence in a civilized society because they’ve learned to control themselves, but some people’s self-control circuitry is simply broken. Such people need to be put in fear of the consequences of stepping out of line, early and often, because that’s the only firewall left.

Either that, or put down like animals themselves. I find it difficult to care very much which option is chosen.

The mugshot effect.

I really don’t get this post. I mean, I get that it’s hyperbole, but explain something to me. You know what it takes to get sentenced to death, right? You know some of the horrific crimes people across this nation have committed that land them on death row. If you’d throw away your code for a single kitten dying (indeed, if you’d beat them to death yourself), what wouldn’t you throw it away for? Why bother having an anti-death penalty stance in the first place?

I don’t support the death penalty for killing a kitten–but I certainly wouldn’t try too hard to convict any animal lover who happened upon that scene and decided in the heat of the moment to give that woman a taste of her own medicine with her own bat. (Note I’m not suggesting I’d want them to kill her–but no way would I cry over some serious pain and a couple of broken bones.)

I do support a lengthy jail term, though, and I’m not at all sad that she’s probably messed up her chance to ever get a decent job again. Should have thought of that before you did the deed, honey. Either your brain’s broken and you need help (and to be taken out of polite society), or you’re a waste of skin sadist that we’d all be better off without (especially your kids).

Fucked up what her kids are learning, sure, and sad for the animal. But why spend all those shelter resources on kitten ICU for one cat (adorable though it may be), when they could have euthanized it and put that money toward adopting out a dozen healthy ones that don’t have homes yet?

These are the sorts of thoughts that keep me from ascending the corporate ladder.

Maybe because, aside from it’s a good thing to do, the high profile news they’ll get from this (cute kittens sell) will spill over to help other animals get adopted? In the other story (Jamarea Mills) the kitten ended up dying on the day it was supposed to be adopted, but quite a few other cats and kittens were adopted from the same shelter by people who had come in after being outraged by the story and touched by the kitten’s plight.

It could be because they have just decided that the abuser isn’t going to “win” by allowing that kitten to die. (I couldn’t bring myself to click on the link, so I may be way off here…).

I’m going out on a limb here and guessing that this is not the sort of person who is very concerned about being a productive member of society.
Note that she had her first kid at age 16 and the other at 19, which is GENERALLY not a sign of someone who is very career-motivated (shall we say). People who think it’s a good idea to beat animals to death in front of their kids and talk about killing humans as well are probably not that worried about how ending up in prison will affect their job prospects.
Honestly, to me this sounds like the kind of person who is willing to spend their lives either in prison or on public assistance sooner than try to find a productive job. There are people like that out there. Some people just do not give a shit about trying to have a productive, law abiding life (possibly because that’s how their family raised them - I like how the article mentions one of Wilana’s relatives was screaming at the person who called the police).

And lucky us, she’s only 24, so she has plenty of time to pop out some more kids to teach to act like her.

I just cannot fathom how anyone could look at a kitten and want to hurt it. That is a sign of a severely deranged human being. If she treats a helpless animal like that, just imagine what she does to her kids. I hope they do a thorough investigation into her family life and remove the children from her care.

In recent months I have found myself exposed to more and more examples of terrifying, tragic and genuinely hideous cruelty towards cats and, (much closer to my heart and somewhat harder to fathom for me personally,) dogs. I “liked” a page or two on FB related to the New Jersey starved pitbull Patrick and from there, well, the hits just keep on coming.

All to say, this is insanely common. Positively pedestrian. And what the world needs to get behind is what I know most Dopers are fully aware of: cruely and violence committed on animals is a direct route to violence and cruelty committed on human beings, so no matter how much you don’t care all that much about cats or dogs or squirrels, if you care about living in a safe world free of violent, cruel people, you need to care about animal cruelty and respond to it promptly with serious treatment. Any kid that is going after a kitten with an aluminum bat needs to be in treatment for years. Years. Or I guarantee you that 20 years from now you are going to be dealing with a violent, cruel adult who is hurting people.

Preach it, sister. I understand the urge, absolutely I do. But a serious commitment to helping homeless and abused animals demands hard-nosed triage and applying the resources in the best way possible. (I’ve been thinking for a long time of getting a discussion about this going… I think people who obsess about preventing death are kinda missing the boat and projecting their own issues on to animals and in the process missing important opportunities to save a greater number of animals from suffering.)

I do understand the big-picture PR fund-raising value of saving animals that get press, though, and I can support saving animals like Patrick, because saving him was pretty simple and easy and it didn’t mean more suffering for him… every single bit of treatment resulted in his feeling better immediately. The same is not true in cases of animals that have been badly injured, particularly animals that have been burned by fire or chemicals. They are being put through an enormous amount of suffering before life feels good again, and combined with the huge resource suck, I think it’s a bad idea and it bugs me.

And the Florida House of Representatives just passed a bunch of new anti-abortion bills to help her reach that goal. Keep fighting the good fight, Florida!

Ah, Hernando County. Not surprising in the least. That woman is a shitstain on society.

Hijack: Patrick is doing much better nowadays. Here’s a brief video of him from a while back.

I thought this was going to be about the pierced “gothic” kittens, which are also disturbing. (Fair warning - there are photos of cats with earrings and more)

At least the cruelty conviction was upheld this week.
