Last night, for reasons too mundane even for this area, I was watching T.V. at about 4 in the morning. T.V. at 4 in the morning just plain sucks, but that’s pretty understandable.
In my quest for some evident of entertainment, I turned to the channel that our cable normally reserves for Comedy Central. I will note now that this is where Comedy Central was located as of Wednesday, and that to the best of my knowledge, Comedy Central has programming 24/7.
I got an infomercial. But it was an amazing infomerical. It was for a product that seemed to be a T.V. remote control with three suction cups stuck on. The idea is this- you attach this device to your face and press a button. The device then begins sending small electrical shocks into your face. In response, several facial muscles begin twitching involuntarily. By applying it to the correct areas, one can cause involuntary muscle spasms above and below the eyes- and here’s the kicker- to exercise these areas in order to remove unsightly wrinkles!
I watched in stunned amazement. There was no laugh track. None of the people involved were recognizable as MadTV, SNL, SCTV, Kids in the Hall, or Upright Citizen’s Brigade members. No statements made that seemed to be for intentional laughs.
So now I am completely confused. Did Comedy Central get pre-empted for this infomercial in the wee hours of the early morning? If so, why has CC always seemed to be on 24/7 before? And who could think that causing involuntary muscle reactions by the application of electricity directly to your face is a good thing? Was this merely a comedy sketch of incredible subtlety? If so, who did this?
