This is an interesting point, the assumption that the way people behave in the Pit is somehow therapeutic. However…aren’t you just ruining someone else’s day, who then kicks the dog, smacks the kid, yells at their spouse, etc.? I’m not saying the venting is valueless, but it doesn’t look like it’s solving much in a larger sense, does it?
I suppose I look at forums a little differently. I personally fear that people will discount my opinion if I openly abuse them, to the point where we can’t even have a productive discussion. What if you are having a productive discussion with a member on GD, get into a flame war with that same person in the Pit on a different topic, and suddenly the discussion in the GD thread becomes completely unproductive because you’ve bruised their ego in the Pit thread? Is that not a concern? Not that exact scenario, but more the general idea that you slowly erode everyone’s willingness to engage forthrightly with you because you’ve bruised their egos too hard.
