I’ll be visiting Salt Lake City next month (ASTM conference), and would appreciate any restaurant / places to go.
I’m especially looking for some type of micro-brewery that I can get pint glasses with the brewery’s logo ( A friend collects them ). Any dopers out there got any info?
Someplace near the Grand America Hotel, if possible ( My company’s too cheap to give me a rental car!
Thanks in advance,
labtrash
Sorry you don’t have a car, otherwise I suggest you spend some time in Park City. (It’s about a 30 minute trip from SLC.) It’s got a micro-brewery on Main Street, and tons of cool restaurants, clubs, and shops (also on Main Street.)
Close to your hotel is Squatters (147 West Broadway) and the Red Rock (254 South 200 West). Either one of those would be a good choice. Also in that area is the Marmot Mesa Brewery (163 West Pierpont), but I don’t know anything about that one.
The Pie is a pretty good pizzeria/bar near the University.
The Mormon Conference Center contains one of the largest pipe organs in the world…
I’ve heard that Antelope Island, which is about a 30-40 minute drive north near Layton, is a pretty good spot to visit at least once. But I’ve never been there.
Also near Layton is a Famous Dave’s…really cool barbeque restaraunt.
Ogden’s Newgate Mall has a place in the food court called “Greek Garden” which I go to whenever I need ‘comfort food’. (I love greek food…actually–I think I love all food, seeing as how three of his suggestions are food places.)
First of all, a little orientation: Salt Lake City’s major streets, especially near city center, are laid out in a grid and mostly numbered, not named, with “ground zero” at the intersection of Main (N-S) and S. Temple (E-W). For example, Broadway is also known as 300 South, so from the Grand America (555 S. Main), Squatters Pub would be 2.5 blocks north and 1.5 blocks west. As I recall, your hotel should be right on the local light-rail line (UTA Trax), so you should have easy mobility without needing a car.
If you like Vietnamese food, Cafe Trang is good, and pretty close to the hotel at 818 S. Main.
You can take Trax to both Trolley Square and Gallivan Plaza, which are shopping areas, with lots of restaurant availability.
If you’re there in time, every 3rd Friday of the month the Salt Lake Gallery Association sponsors a gallery stroll amongst the local art dealers.
That’s great, thanks everyone!
What about sushi?
Any good places for that?

Mikado Japanese Restaurant is at 67 W. 100 South, right across from Salt Palace (the convention center). Take Trax to Temple Square, and walk a block south.
There is also a Japanese restaurant within Gallivan Center; I think its name is Happy Sumo, but can’t remember, and I’ve never eaten there.
The Utah Arts Festival will be held Jun 20-23 at the Gallivan Center (a couple blocks north of the Grand America). If you happen to be in town that week, give it a go… good assortment of artists and performers.
You can take TRAX south toward Franklin Covey Field at 1300 South and West Temple, where you can take in a Salt Lake Stingers baseball game.
Take TRAX east to Trolley Square, an upscale shopping mall with several restaurants (Desert Edge Brewery offers logo merchandise), at 600 South and 700 East. Get off TRAX at the Trolley stop and walk 2 blocks south.
Alas, I’ll only be there from June 25th to the 28th!
The Salt Lake Stingers?!?!?! What happened to the Buzz? Did they change the name, or get a new team? If they changed the name, that messes up the whole “Double Z” pattern! That’s all Utah Sports has got! Say it isn’t so!
i had to go to SLC for a specialized training class. was there a week and i swear i could hardly find ANY good food! those people could screw up ice! The training facilily took us all out for lunch to “nice places” but the food always ended up being bland and horrible. I went out solo for dinner everynight and only had one good meal. (small family-run mexican joint with real good authentic food). Never found good Sushi, steak, Italian or anything even close to fun to do at night. (and not for lack of trying! at the time, i was young, single and had lots of money to throw around) Hated it! Was in such a hurry to get home, i got a speeding ticket!
So, to answer the question in the thread title, I would say, “Wish you were somewhere, ANYWHERE else!”
i like to quote a series of “SLC” jokes, but as they are pretty derogitory, i won’t put them here.
Why does California have earthquakes and Utah have a Salt Lake?
California got first pick.
I happen to be wearing a “I tried polygamy” t-shirt from Wasatch Brewing Company (?). Just ask who brews “Polygamy Porter”. It would make a good souvenier, but be aware that what they consider XL is more like an L.
The Dead Goat Saloon is also good - but you might want to get advice from others about whether it’s safe.
(Obligatory Utah Slam)
I hate that place. It’s not friendly for hippie, beer-drinking athiests. The liqour laws are stupid, the “club membership” stuff is BS. If you want a cheap thrill at the airport, order a beer and a shot (and you MUST show ID at the airport). I’m going there in Utah for a conference and the goal is to get in and out of Utah as quickly as possible. SLC - the only town that brags about being “only 50%” Mormon.
(end rant)
Disclaimer - the rant isn’t about Mormons as individuals or the validity of the Mormon religion. It’s about archaic, stupid liqour laws which are based on religion.

Sorry, that rant was inappropriate to the OP. It was just a knee jerk reaction to the word “Utah”
My apologies.
Carry on.
