My best friend and I are going to St. Thomas next month for a long weekend (getting there Friday afternoon, leaving Tuesday afternoon). We’re staying at the oh-so-posh Ritz-Carleton. So, besides lounging beside the infinity edge pool drinking girlie drinks with umbrellas, what should we do/see in St. Thomas? Any restaurants you’d recommend? I want to do a day trip to Jost van Dyke–The Soggy Dollar, but what else should we do?
I agree with An Arky, a day or half-day trip to St. John is almost a must. Take the ferry from Red Hook to the island.
Most resorts offer shuttles into Charlotte Amalie. You can check out the town in an afternoon if you want, have lunch at a little cafe, do some price wagering with merchants, generally enjoy the shops.
A taxi ride up to “Mountain Top” – the highest point in St. Thomas will get you to an amazing view of the island on a good day, a fresh banana daiquiri, and if you want a tram ride down the mountain. Some cheesy shops are up there, too. Paradise Point Tramway
Estate St. Peter Greathouse & Botanical Gardens are an amazing stop on the island. You can take a quiet, self-guided tour through the estate with over 500 varieties of plants and and check out some local artwork and artsy shops. “An observation deck, 1,000 feet above sea level, offers panoramic views of more than 20 Virgin Islands and provides picturesque photo opportunities.”
And if you really want to experience a beach that will knock your socks off, get over to Megan’s Bay, often listed as one of the Top 10 beaches in the world: Megan’s Bay More Megan’s Bay
I lived in St Thomas for a year a few years ago. Definitely take the 20 minute Ferry Ride to St. John! The beaches are spectacular! Great underwater snorkeling trails…
Don’t forget to visit Bluebeard’s & Blackbeard’s castles in Charlotte Amalie!
I forget all the names of the bars/restaurants we used to hang out at, but it is a party island! It is also dangerous after dark, so always walk in pairs.
I spent a week on St John last year and I would definitely recomend a side trip. If you can spend a night over there, go check out Duffy’s Love Shack (it’s a bar, people) and a local hangout place called … aw nuts. I don’t remember. Something to do with clams. We had a great time paddling around in a sea kayak, too. Have fun!!
There used to be a bar in St. John (not sure if it’s still there) called the Poor Man’s Bar. When you ordered a drink (eg. Absolut & Cranberry), they’d give you a tumbler of ice, the bottle of Absolut and the bottle of cranberry juice, and then you would pour your own drink however strong you’d like!
stayed on Saphire Beach… nice beach there… I am not sure what kind of place you are looking for… but if you are looking for a fun bar… go to Duffy’s Love Shack in redhook… all kinds of fun drinks there… and plenty of fine looking people at night…
Megans Bay was nice…
I also really liked Trunk Bay on St. John for snorkling…
I think my favorite beach was honeymoon beach on St. John… and right next to it is Salmon beach… (nude) where you will be able to watch old ugly fat men walk around naked…
The Italian resturaunt accross from Duffy’s was pretty good… not cheap… but the food was great…
