What to serve at a "Rings"-themed party?

Don’t forget the nice crispy bacon!

Nowadays, it’s called “pilot biscuits”, and it’s sold in backpacking stores. I suspect that the recipe hasn’t changed in the past four ages, though. Heck, some of the stuff I’ve had, I wouldn’t be surprised if the biscuits themselves were four ages old.

Hmm, I could have sworn there was a thread exactly like this last year for someone who wanted to have an FOTR and TTT Extended Edition watching party prior to the opening of ROTK.

I suggested checking out a recipe section on a LOTR themed website I used to visit. I lost the address but I believe it was called The Council of Elrond.

But if you just want ring-shaped foods, some delis can make a big sandwich in a ring shape. Can’t go wrong with a big sandwich.

If you sever fish, be sure it’s “raw and wriggling”.

Mutton’s not THAT hard, but it is time-consuming and I forgot you’re a student… that changes things.

Actually, why not keep it potluck so you’re not stuck doing all the food prep, and have everyone else bring one creative ring-shaped food item? You should offer only beverages: beer, red wine, mead, and a pot of coffee.

If there are at least ten people at the party, you can have nine rings of food gifted to men… and one ring to eat them all! Or something.

I second the ring-shaped big sandwich idea, but I’m wondering if as a student you can afford it right before Christmas break.

Squid cut in cross-section are ring-shaped.

So, you could either go for the popular bar appetizer deep-fried calamari (aka calamares a la romana) (available already-breaded and frozen in some grocery stores) or use fresh squid, cut into rings, saute them lightly, and serve with pasta and a sauce of your choosing. The latter are healthier but less finger-foody.

Here’s a previous thread where we discussed LOTR-themed food and party snacks.

Yep. Most of the recipes looks pretty good. There’s a lot of lembas recipes under the elves section and even one for cram under the dwarves section.

How about Grog or Mead?

Can Pop-Tarts count as lembas?

No, TWINKIES are lembas. From Tolkien Crackpot Theories:
*Has anyone else noticed the apparent similarities between Lembas and Hostess Twinkies? Please consider the following:

  1. Both are lightly-baked cakes with creme filling.

  2. Both are hermetically-sealed in some type of wrapper (mallorn leaf for lembas and malleable plastic leaf for Twinkies).

  3. Both will remain fresh if their wrapping remains unbroken (in fact, Twinkies are reputed to have a shelf-life of several million years either in or out of their wrapping).

Are lembas an early prototype for the modern-day Twinkies? *

Check out the rest of the Crackpot Theories… they’re pretty good.

Casked conditioned ale.

There’s a take-out place near my home called The Wingdom. They bill themselves as the “Lord of the Hot Wings”. When The Two Towers Extended Edition came out, we loaded up on extra-hot wings and munched out while we watched it. Good times!

A few more Ring ideas

  • Shrimp ring
  • sliced pitted olives

Raw fish and/or raw rabbit (two of Gollum’s favorites).
Hobbit. I don’t know remember how the Orcs intended to prepare Merry and Pippin, but they were going to eat them. Now, hobbit isn’t something you can just run down to your corner grocery and buy, though some specialty shops might have it. So, as a quick n’ easy substitute, I suggest buying a whole lamb or cabrito ( without head) roasting it whole, and then dressing it up in some clean children’s clothes before serving. For the sake of realism when serving, you might consider making a head from a large baked potato or similar vegetable. Imagine the fun when you unveil it at table and all the party goers can howl and lunge for it…tearing off bits and running to various corners of the room to gnaw at their prizes in private. Some sort of bitter ale that orcs might conceivably drink wouyld be a complimentary beverage.

Everybody knows Hobbitses taste like chicken!

I made sweet potato biscuits from scratch this weekend, and they keep wonderfully well. With a 3" diameter drinking glass and a round shot glass for cutters, you could cut them into ring shapes before baking.

Frodo, of the Nine Finger Sandwiches?

Buy a whole bunch of animal crackers and separate out the elephants. Serve those (oliphaunt cookies!) and save the rest for yourself for later.

And here’s another.
