I was a big fan of the first Battlestar Galactica. I was so sad when it was cancelled, and thrilled when I heard of Galactica 1980. I couldn’t wait to watch…
Galactica was really the defining show if my childhood. I loved it. I can’t watch it any more because it really is a massive cheese fest.
And that’s why the reboot is so amazing. It really made Galactica into something lasting and good. Too bad the final season wasn’t so great.
I’m not really good for knowing about shows ahead of time; most of my favorite shows I started watching after they had a season or more in the bag. Even in the cases of some of the shows I really like, that I picked up starting with the pilot (e.g., Scorpion, The Librarians), they were shows that I didn’t find out about until, like, the week before the pilot aired. The only show that I like that I even knew about far enough in advance to build up any anticipation is Supergirl and, at least to this point, it has not disappointed me.
The show that I have most eagerly anticipated that I can ever remember is Jessica Jones. I want to watch that show, like, really bad. Which is extra sad, because I don’t actually have a subscription to Netflix.
As a kid? * Batman*.
As an adult? The return of Doctor Who.
Star Trek: The Next Generation. Huge fan of the Old Stuff, had all the movies on VHS, couldn’t wait to see what the new series would look like.
Marvel: Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Similarly a huge fan of all the Marvel hero movies and all the shows Joss Whedon had created, and I was definitely looking forward to seeing how his new TV series turned out.
Start Trek: The Next Generation. More Star Trek! Just pump it right into my vein. Kirk and Spock had the movies so it wasn’t a problem that they weren’t in the new series. It was exciting to anticipate all the advances from an updated Federation and felt forward looking.
On the other hand I didn’t like the idea of a reboot for the newest movies and haven’t seen them so I don’t know if I should anticipate another series.
Futurama. Wow, it’s like The Simpsons go into outer space (which actually just recently happened.) There was some good magazine coverage of pre-show and internet buzz, which was relatively new for me.
Am I the only one that was looking forward to Seinfeld? I seem to remember him being on talk shows promoting it and since he was the funniest comedian I definitely made a point to watch.
The only one I can remember now is that I was looking forward to Doogie Howser because I was a smart kid and wanted something cool to identify with, or that would reflect my experience, or make me feel less invisible and disregarded. I believe I found the show disappointing.
If I recall correctly, I was at least curious about the next generation star trek because I knew that there’d been the old show, and that there were movies, and I’d seen in a library book that the star trek universe had this whole chronology of what happened in 1990, 2050, etc. I hadn’t seen instances of fleshed-out universes before.
Definitely ST: TNG, which made my subsequent disappointment with it all the worse.
Ditto for the original Battlestar Galactica, though it had the decency to die an ignominious death after one season, thank God!
I suppose Gotham would be the most recent, though my level of anticipation never quite reached those of the above two.
Can’t say I remember any great build-up to the 1966 Batman, but I was hooked after watching the first episode with the Joker (No. 5, I believe). I had been hearing about the series for a couple of weeks from my friends at school and decided to give it a try.
I loved it when I heard The Avengers were coming back on ABC in 1966, and couldn’t wait for the debut of Time Tunnel, Green Hornet, and*** Rat Patrol*** that same year.
Had to be Star Trek TNG. It was the Phantom Menace before the Phantom Menace.
Probably Lost. The hype was good, and the show largely lived up to it, at least in the first few seasons.
I was excited about Batman, but was highly disappointed. I know it was high camp, but I was expecting something better.
I actually was hyped about the New WKRP in Cincinnati. I really enjoyed the show in reruns as a kid. Then it went back into rotation again after school and I remember thinking how awesome it would be if they still made the show.
Then the New WKRP was announced (almost like I wished it into being). Unfortunately, it wasn’t very good.
I can’t believe how long ago that was! I was still in high school.
The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles! I watched those shows almost religiously. Loved 'em!
Okay, I won’t defend them, today, as top-notch TV. They had some flaws. But the World War One sequences, especially, were damned good.
“And so ten thousand men lived for one more day…”
My eagerness for the Doctor Who reboot was so great that I actually lost sleep thinking about it. I wished for Paul McGann, but Christopher Eccleston was a mighty good Doctor (while he lasted).
Star Trek: Deep Space Nine for me. TNG was my initiation into Trek, and I eagerly awaited the newest spin-off. DS9 ended up as my favorite TV series of all-time.
Kolchak: The Night Stalker
The two made-for-TV movies were SOOO good, I couldn’t wait for the series. The first episode had its moments and then the series spiralled into the toilet.
I was kinda excited about The Colbert Report. That was a pretty damn good show most of the time, I shit you not. Other than that, the only TV I get excited about is on PBS, college football and Formula One.
I’m probably the only one but I really don’t like any of these modern shows on TV. Can’t stand watching any of them so I pretty much quit watching TV outside of ME/Antenna once in a while. My wife watches a few like Once up a Time, Sleepy Hollow…etc and ugh I hate them. Tried to watch some newer show called 2 broke girls…seriously? Wtf is that crap, it’s not even funny for an inside chuckle.
That said I don’t think I’ve ever anticipated much on TV except maybe Married with Children or something.
Aquarius. The Sixties period drama featuring David Duchovny chasing Charles Manson.
What a disappointment.
If you’re talking about the original, then yeah.
Around that time was Kung Fu. The pilot movie was excellent. There were some good episodes along the way, but it was rough quality wise.
