What TV show/Movie re-run was I watching?

I can vaguely remember that as a kid I watched this interesting science fiction series about a professor and two kids who went off into space to look for the kids’ father. He had gone missing in a similar spaceship. The series focused on the known science of our solar system, on physics, and other scientific stuff. I remember that it was produced in conjunction with the Hayden Planetarium, was in black in white (at least on my TV), was set in the year 1980(?), had these wonderful big imposing block titles, and a great announcer’s voice at the end saying “You won’t want to miss the next exciting episode…”

The cartooning was true animation, not the Lip-tronic “Space Angel” stuff. The space ships were typical 1950s style, all one piece, aerodynamic (why?), with big open cockpits that looked like the front of a B-29.

Does this ring any sort of bell with anyone? Or am I hallucinating? Well, I could be hallucinating anyway, but does anyone know what I’m talking about?

Mod, if this belongs somewhere else, please move it.

OOOPS! Stop the presses! I found my own answer! I honestly didn’t expect it to be that easy.

The title of the series was The Space Explorers. For the rest of the story, see this article

AAAAAH! I remember that show well – it got me interested in science fiction, but up until now, no one (and I’ve asked on the SDMB) has ever come up with an answer.

Thank you!
