ETA: Looks like I’m not really a gamer at all! I used to be, I guess, but I now have too many other interests - and a job :).

You need to define what you think a ‘gamer’ is.

As I said, I play a few PC Strategy games about 25 hours a week. I’m trying to get really good at them.
My background is in chess, where it takes decades of serious practice to achieve international standard.

Now the kids at my school play loads of free Internet games. Each time a new one comes out, they all switch to it…

Are you saying they are gamers and I’m not?

I think you’re missing the levels you can fall into with the quiz. A “Dedicated” gamer will play a lot of different games and game all the time.

On the other hand, you game a lot, but it’s all within the same genre, on only a handful of games. So according to the quiz, you would fall lower on the gamer scale.

1.How many of the following consoles do you own: PlayStation 3, Wii, Xbox 360.

    D. No

I definitely think older consoles should have a place in your quiz, Justin, especially since it seems like there are lots of people who consider themselves gamers - they came in here to take the quiz, after all - who one only one of the new consoles, or none of them.

My husband is as hardcore of a gamer as one can be, while still holding down a job and a family life. If he’s awake and at home, and not spending time with me and the kids, you can bet your sweet ass he’s playing video games. But we don’t own a PS3 or Xbox 360. (Yet.) We do, however, own every other console known to man except for Gamecube (moot, since we have the Wii) and Dreamcast. He’s also got a sweet gaming PC.

Long story short, it’d be nice to see gamers like us represented a little better. You know, the ones who’d love to have everything, but just can’t afford it.

That said, I think this quiz is a great idea, and it seems like you have put quite a bit of thought into it. My invisible yet lovely hat is off to you!

B. One but I plan on buying the other two when the price gets under $200. I can wait.

B. Played two Mortal Kombats but I worked out that I don’t like a lot of fighting games back when Street Fighter II was the hot thing so I’ve only played one Soul Calibur and Dead or Alive game.

B. I’m participating in discussion right now. I check news aggregates but I haven’t followed gaming websites in years since my tolerance for them burned out a long time ago.

D. I have no idea what those sites are so, no.

C. Usually I do but I made the mistake of showing someone a game a few weeks ago and haven’t seen mine since. I’m on the verge of buying a second one…

A. I’ve got the originals, why do I need the collections?

D. All of the above.

B. Sometimes I have a life and I’m mentally stable enough to recognize that it’s not a bad thing.

D. Probably numbers around 100. I’m not counting.

B. but no one has published one that I enjoy in nearly ten years.

B. na NAAAAA na Na NA Na na

D. And Taiko Drum Master. And that Eye Toy rhythm game. And Karaoke Revolution. And…

B, I guess, since they’ve published two franchises I like. Blizzard has never made a game I liked, Infinity Ward is essentially just making FPS for consoles so I’m not playing their games, and I don’t touch Madden.

D. Definitely D.

So… where are the board game and RPG questions? Seems unfair to just make this about video games…

I think you need to expand your horizons - a lot. Why is someone who plays first person shooters a more hard core gamer than someone who plays board games? Your snobbery is showing and it isn’t attractive. Accept that people who self identify as gamers are gamers. That may mean they have all the new rules to D&D memorized already, or that they mash buttons on every first person shooter released, or they play online poker, or they can’t wait for Diablo III or they play nothing but Popcap games or they are a world ranked Bridge player. That may mean they spend 60 hours a week gaming and working in the game industry - or they have really only managed to get their WoW character to level 20 because they only have time to play when the kids are napping on the weekends. They are seventy year old grandmothers who play Bejeweled and seven year old boys who can whip your butt on Mario Cart on the DS. (And seven year old girls who will drive you bonkers with their Webkinz and teaching their Nintendogs tricks - trust me on this one).

Watch my eight year old daughter - she is a Sam and Max adventure game addict. Her Webkinz are cared for, her Club Penguin account is active, her Nintendogs trained. She’s pretty good at Spoons and board games. Can’t manage a Playstation game - button pushing isn’t her thing and she is easily frustrated by her nine year old brother’s prowess (who has the nine year old innate video game controller skill). She’s a gamer.

(Note that I live in a Gamer house - we don’t have a Playstation 3, but each of the other consoles and a Playstation 2. We have and are playing 4th edition D&D. My husband is well connected in the board game and the computer game industry - and peripherally works in the second. I don’t consider myself a gamer, but in the past month have probably logged over 40 hours on either PC, Wii or XBox games.)

(Oh, and I score 22 on your scale - and I don’t consider myself a gamer).

Why do people seem to get offended that this quiz applies to video game players only? I’m not saying D&D players or board gamers aren’t “Gamers”. So why the worry?

Also, you’ll see that online-only games like Webkinz and PopCap and online poker were covered in one of the questions specifically and would count on the “Do you game everyday?” question as well.

I’ve been playing and hoarding video games since the early eighties. I own almost every console known to man, hundreds of cartridges and CD’s, and a high end gaming PC. I even have a bin filled with Tiger LCD games in my basement. I enjoy D&D and Monopoly. I play Animal Crossing and Call of Duty 4.

Do I call myself a gamer? No.

Gamers do not play to have fun. Gamers only play to win, and when they don’t they get frustrated and throw things. When there’s nothing left to throw, they log on to forums and complain about balance.

Gamers think the first and only genre is multiplayer shooter.

Gamers enjoy teamkilling, griefing, and smack talking. They pollute teamspeak with n-bombs and think that “fag” is the epitome of insults.

Gamers have never worked in the game industry, but that doesn’t stop them from telling developers how they should do things. Their favorite thing to say is, “It wouldn’t be hard to implement…”

Gamers think that piracy doesn’t hurt anyone. They whine about piracy countermeasures while at the same time downloading DS roms. They think they’re justified because they’re just “trying it out.”

Gamers bitch about big corporations like EA while habitually buying their games.

Gamers classify themselves as real gamers, while everyone else is a casual gamer.

Am I a gamer? No. I just play video games.

If that is that case, why worry about what “kind” of gamer anyone is? Why create this post at all? Why try and class people along the “Justin_Bailey thread of I get to define Video Gamers and MMORPs Don’t Count.” What are you hoping to accomplish? You are a little sick of “hardcore” and “casual” definitions - I’m a little sick of the “lets claim some people don’t count” games.

I’m not really offended - I just think you are being pedantic. And your methodology sucks.

I think some people are being unduly harsh on Justin. He’s a video gamer, and he is involved in the industry as a blogger and I belive writer or editor (Right? Sorry if I’m in error). When people in that circle (myself included) ask if you are a gamer It’s automaticly assumed you mean: “are you a video gamer”?

Just like if we were in Vegas, he would be likely to mean: “are you a gambler”?

He then made it obvious to anyone what kind of gamer he was inquiring about with the nature of the questions in his quiz.

I’m not seeing where all the hate is coming from. Should he have included gambling questions in case any gamblers on the baord were offended that he didn’t include THEM when he asked: “what kind of gamer are you”?

Interestingly, my score comes out pretty darned close to zero, for the following reasons:

  1. I don’t own any “modern” consoles. My son, on the other hand, owns Xbox 360, Wii, Playstation 3, and DS, and we play together on them. Sometimes I even play without him

  2. I don’t own any “modern” console games. We have a subscription to GameFly. That’s fine for most console games that grow boring after a while. My son owns most of the ones with good replay value (e.g. the Guitar Hero series).

  3. I put a lot of hours into World of Warcraft, and I’ve spent far too much time on various other PC games. I don’t have a “customized” or “tweaked out” gamer machine because I mostly use a Mac, and it doesn’t need to be tweaked out. I own a pile of old consoles, and modern ports of classic arcade games. I also have a bunch of classic computer games, including stuff that predates PCs (a port of Colossal Cave Adventure, for example). None of this counts on the quiz.

  4. The quiz also gives no credit for non-electronic games (e.g., Magic the Gathering or Scrabble).

Quizzes can’t be perfect. But for someone who plays some type of game or another 4-5 days a week, zero’s a pretty bad score

Exactly. I plan to post this quiz on my blog sometime in the near future and since Dopers love quizes, I thought this would be a great place to work the kinks out.

I guess I was wrong to discount the fury of the D&D gamers.

Noooo… I’m too bloody broke to afford a modern gaming system, and the games, as well as keeping my computer to continue my Dope addiction.

HE REFERRED TO ALL RPG’S AS “D&D”! GET HIM!

I call myself a gamer, but I don’t do any of the things you say. Don’t confuse some assholes you’ve run into with the rest of us.

Congratulations, you have created a Cosmo Quiz. At the end of the quiz, we will know if you should date a tall, handsome, romantic guy or a funny, geeky guy. We will not leave any room for dating athletic guys or deep brooders, and if you like funny romantic guys, it doesn’t fit in our box.

Next month the quiz will tell you if your bedroom is decorated in a way to entice men to marry, or entice men to give you the wildest night of your life!

If this is what you set out to do, you have accomplished it.
