I consider myself a dedicated gamer!
What a bizarre thing for Dangerosa to get offended by. He’s not measuring what you want him to measure, therefore he’s a snob?
Of course, I’m still kind of amused that people who play a lot of video games are no longer simply “people who play a lot of video games.” Serious question: can kids be “gamers”? I ask because playing a lot of video games is pretty much the default leisure time activity for boys.
I’m not offended - I’m just poking in the hopes of getting someone’s head out of the box. And I’m not alone in this thread on pointing out that not owning three current generation gaming consoles may say more about a persons finances than about how dedicated they are. Or that a dedicated gamer may be a loyalist to a game and not a slut. Or someone who is juggling a job, family or school might just be too busy to indulge.
Hardly anyone ever says – or thinks – that they’re offended, but you pretty clearly were in this case. (Or, at least, you did a fantastic impersonation of someone taking offense.)
That’s all fine, but where others maybe said, ‘I think you could improve your quiz by adding X, Y, and Z,’ you said:
It’s a silly little video game quiz; other people didn’t like certain things about it, but they said or and/or made suggestions in a friendly, good-natured way. Naturally. But because you didn’t like the parameters of his quiz, he’s all of a sudden a narrow-minded, pedantic snob whose methodology “sucks,” and who is claiming that some people “don’t count.” Is there some previous animosity between you two? Because that’s way, way too harsh given the topic and the perceived offense.
I did a fantastic impression of being offended - I was pissy yesterday about something completely unrelated and it bled through. I guess I was offended, but certainly not by this.
Yeah, that’ll happen – done it myself a few times.

Another interesting thing about the quiz: you get points if you read video game websites or participate in game discussion online (which I don’t do unless you count this forum), but you don’t get points for listening to gaming podcasts or reading game magazines. I presume the OP works for a videogame Web site with discussion capabilities.
And, as I mentioned earlier, the quiz is oriented around owning stuff. I guess people who rent games or get them from GameFly aren’t “real” gamers, just like the ones who share consoles, enjoy older consoles, play MMORPGs, play strategy games, and so on…
Why would a gaming podcast not count as a game website? And why wouldn’t this forum count as game discussion? And the revised quiz (a few posts up) does include magazines in that question.
Not you too Wombat. And the quiz is not built around owning stuff, only 6 of the 17 questions are about “owning” things.
I plan to revise the quiz again to add questions on older consoles and MMORPGs.
I really think you need to change the title to something like ‘What sort of video gamer are you?’ or ‘What sort of reflex gamer are you?’.
Apart from playing and teaching turn-based games like Civ and Heroes, I also play chess + Diplomacy, solve chess problems and roleplay. (I’ve come in the top 4 in the English Championships in all four of these. )
Yet none of this counts in your survey…
Yep. You’re a gamer. Welcome and broaden your horizons a tad. Try not to look down your nose at your fellow gamers, willya?
Because it has nothing to do with the Web. One of the game-related podcasts I listen to does have a Web site, but I’ve never visited it. The other doesn’t have one, as far as I know. Web sites are visual, and I sit at my computer and look at them. Podcasts are aural. They download automatically to iTunes, I load them in my iPod, and I listen to them in the car.
Oh, don’t get me wrong, Justin, I’m not picking on you. I know how difficult it is to create a proper quiz without interjecting a lot of personal bias into it. But when 1/3 of the questions require you to own the game (as opposed to “do you play X” or “have you spent at least X hours playing Y” or “have you reached the final level of X” or…), then you’re automatically biased against people without much money or people who have kids/parents/roommates who already own those games & consoles.
Cool!
