What type of professional can help decide on a hairstyle?

I’ve always wondered for the longest time what kind of hair styles would look good on me, but haven’t taken action till now. I have absolutely no knowledge of hair styles or hair designs.

I’ve phoned around a few hair salons, but I can only find places that offer to style your hair the way you want it, but no assistance or consultations available.

Am I looking for the wrong professional or am I’m getting some bad luck? Open to suggestions! Thanks!

I’m not at all knowledgeable about this sort of thing, but it sounds as though what you want is an image consultant or makeover specialist? They’re the people who decide what you should look like, and then the hairstylist’s job is to make you look that way.

Find the right barber/stylist.

People look at me funny when they find out I drive over an hour to get my haircut, but I’m happy with where I go.

I’ve always had my regular hairstylist at the time help- but I’ve never called and wanted to make an appointment for a consultation. I just go for my appointment and ask what the stylist thinks will look go on me. She asks a few questions- length, bangs , etc and she cuts my hair in a way that she thinks will suit me within those constraints. I don’t describe what I want in detail and I’m not pointing to a picture. Perhaps the places you’re calling will do this and simply aren’t used to someone wanting to set up a consultation separately from a cut. If that’s even what you actually want to do - that’s how it sounds to me, but I could be misunderstanding.

If you google “virtual hairstyle”, you can find various sites with which you can upload a photo and try on different haircuts. Here are some examples I made earlier: 1, 2, 3.

I’ve always had luck asking my stylist just to do what they think will look nice. They’ll usually ask some basic questions, and go from there. I always make sure to reassure them that I am very flexible and will be happy with basically any result. It probably helps to wear clothes that are “typical you” so that they can get an understanding of what you are like.

Another route is to use one of the many available hairstyle apps to preview styles, and then ask people which ones they like. The disadvantage is that these don’t account for your hair type.

What kind of hair salons are you calling? In my experience, the cheap salons (which are about all I use these days) tend to be cut to order or offer just minute change suggestions to a style you tell them they want, and the more expensive ones will offer much more input into the cut and style they think would suit you.

So find a more expensive salon, and you may find what you’re looking for.

You need a professional stylist. You pay them to tell you what to wear, what makeup you should use, yes, some men are now wearing makeup, and how you should style your hair. Of course you’ll have to keep going back to them every six months so you are always wearing the latest style. If you are a professional model this is a good investment, however…

No doubt his stylist must be a master at his craft in order to pull that one off.

If you’re a man: short back and sides and sensible on top. Anything else and you will literally look ridiculous.

Question answered.

Psychiatrist or licensed therapist? Casting director? Wife or significant other?

Then you can walk into an artsy salon or that Russian guy’s place down the block. See what they say, and then compare.

Remember, life is short.

I’m fine with the short back and sides, but I go a little crazy/fauxhawk on top. And my guy spends more time on my facial hair than on my scalp.

I have hair to my waist … frightens people east of the Sierra’s … funny …

Depending on what “sensible” means. I have a lot of trouble finding a barber who understands the concept of a “part”. :frowning:

Using a virtual hair style app to give you some ideas will likely give you some ideas, but keep calling around to pricier places, but be aware that some stylists might think the know more than you about what your hair should look like, and don’t let them pressure you into something you don’t want.

You stylist should not only ask you what kind of look you want, but what kind of time and effort you want to put in, since some styles you might see take a lot of time and effort and product to achieve. They will also hopefully be honest with you about what kind of hair you have and what will and won’t work for you.

Hope you find a stylist you love and a look you enjoy!

I want my hair style to be the one where, if a witness to my crime has to describe it, they would say, “I dunno. It was just like, you know, hair.”

Oh dear; I haven’t had any hair since 1998.
