What types of threads on the Dope make your jaw drop?

Word… man.

I think it’s cool that people are free enough to share these things - and Lord knows I do read these threads from time to time - but some of the stuff that folks share means that I will always see them as “hey, that’s the guy who fucked a dead squirrel,” rather than a multidimensional human beings. And seeing as I’ve met Dopers in RL at Dopefests and on other social networking sites, it could happen…

What Exit?, please see post #14. If you’re specifically addressing another poster, you’re starting a debate at least. You addressed two.

Yes, these topics, especially the sex-related threads. There’s a recent one about sex toys, and I was amazed at the laundry lists of … things people posted.

Disclaimer: I have posted in a bunch of migraine-related threads about medications I’ve used, but I’ve never posted anything beyond that.

Threads where the leftists keep piling on and doing lots of name calling and ad hominem attacks without adding any substantial informaton. I’m still amazed.

Twin sons of different mothers, my friend.

I get the rationale expressed, really, I do. But it’s available for anyone, anytime, for any nefarious intents you’ve not yet even considered. Not to be rude but, seriously… fuck that shit.

You can put stuff out there that’s accurate yet bumped, misdirected, whatever. The gist, sense and heart comes though without the baggage. That I’m comfortable with.

Threads supporting Tipping as a good idea.

Which is not to say that I think people shouldn’t Tip, because clearly it’s a part of the system and has to be maintained, otherwise chaos could ensue. But I think of it being such a stupid and unfair concept, I can’t fathom how anyone can want it to continue as is.

What baffles me are some of the opinions expressed in threads about:

  • Tipping
  • Washing hands after using the bathroom
  • Guns
  • The ethics of certain situations (e.g. “Is it OK if I use my neighbor’s WiFi, without his consent?”)
  • Libertarianism

Sometimes someone will say something like “I just realized song/book/movie X is actually about Y,” and I think to myself how could you not have seen that before. It’s like they just discovered symbolism.

Also the guns threads.

Nothing here makes my jaw drop. Sure, I read some thoughts and opinions that are completely different to my own, but then I understand that the world is made up of all kinds of people.
In fact, I like the fact that this board goes from discussing the most mundane of things to the big big questions!

At my age, nothing makes my jaw drop anymore. But I have a little trouble understanding people who have ***extremely ***strong reactions to other people’s innocuous preferences. Like people who condemn putting catsup on a hot dog, as if it were a crime against humanity.

I’m always amazed that no matter how self-evident an OP might be, someone will come in and argue a contrary position. I remember one thread was a rant against people who don’t use their turn signal, and a few people chimed in with their own experiences, and then just as sure God loves little green apples someone came in to argue that they didn’t use their turn signals in certain situations and here’s why. IIRC, their arguments were criminally weak, but damned if they didn’t hang in there like grim death.

I swear I’m tempted to start threads like “I think it’s a bad idea to kick puppies” or “Here’s why I don’t stick my head up a horse’s bum”, just so I can get a lock on the puppy kickers and horse’s assheads.

I will admit to being guilty of this. I don’t think I have done this in a thread but I do it regularly in my everyday life.

I just plain don’t pay any attention. I am horribly oblivious to the most obvious stuff, no matter how much I try. I can figure out a meaning to a song if I really pay attention and try but I’d much rather listen and enjoy the voice.

It is. :stuck_out_tongue:
Really, nothing much astounds me on the Dope. Here are all the varieties of the Human Condition, interacting electronically. Truly wonderful. Some of you are fucking nuts, but I’m quite sure the feeling is reciprocated, so it’s all good.

I’m sometimes amazed at the extent to which a particular fandom or…err…subculture, apparently defines some posters.

It isn’t so much that I disapprove or think it is silly, I just wonder where some folks get the time they apparently have to devote to these little alternate worlds they have invented and participate in with other people.

I barely have enough time to live my pathetic little real life, and if there were two more hours in the day I would probably use them for sleeping.

Lagomorph, kinda like the Dope? :stuck_out_tongue:

More like The Dope on steroids to the third power, apparently.

For me, it was the thread a couple of months ago where somebody was really pissed off that somebody else spoiled a whole season of The Wire by giving away the ending. It’s just a fictional TV show, for Christ’s sake.

The almost cult-like threads on global warming.

The level of petty, childish and simply mean-spirited histrionics people are throwing themselves into over someone not turning on the AC in their own damn car.

I’m not surprised by vitriol in politics threads. I am surprised by people having extremely strong condemnations of things like letting cats go outdoors. I am also a little puzzled at what people consider theft these days.
