Seriously! I am not a fan of Bush (err, the President, I enjoy the band and most other kinds of bush), but the idea that he was going to plant his flag in the sand on Election Day and turn the world into Bush Country was just idiotic.
I was told in all seriousness that Bush was going to singlehandedly strike down Roe v Wade. I mean, how paranoid can you be?
I also find some advice to be extreme. “Your boyfriend won’t leave the toilet seat down for you?? Run. Run now. Consider yourself lucky that you aren’t stuck dealing with his horrendous behaviour for the rest of your life. Consider yourself lucky that you found out so soon what an unthoughtful loser he is. Run, don’t walk.”
Granted, there are certain circumstances when that is sound advice, but sometimes people are too quick to dole it out, especially considering they’ve read about only one aspect of the situation.
There are threads where people display mindsets that are so different than mine as to be almost inconceivable to me.
Many of the religious-discussion threads fall into this category, as does the thread now running where people described the point at which they knew that their SO is The One. I simply cannot emotionally grasp what it is to have that kind of faith.
Personal hygiene threads. About Dopers, or friends, or coworkers, or whoever. I cannot BELIEVE some people can be so disgusting and uncouth.
Or threads where people justify their right to be assholes, and then act as if the rest of us should be offended.
Threads where people post how they’re shocked, SHOCKED to learn that other people have the nerve to think or act differently than they do. Oh, look, here’s one now.
It’s Ketchup you fucking heretic! People like you need to be slowly boiled in olive oil and then roasted over an open fire, your bodies should them be cremated, your ashes buried, and salt spread on the ground so that nothing ever grows there again!
( for the humor impaired)
I mean, I understand that people may disagree with each other on politics. I understand that political threads can get, shall we say, less than couth.
But to move beyond “okay, we differ politically, so let’s talk about how” to “you disagree with me because you are ignorant, not because you have a legitimate difference of opinion” just astounds me.
When did people stop wanting to understand each other and stop listening to each other, and start just dismissing each other with unhelpful and condescending labels?
Yes, I know, it was when the first two people started interacting with each other at all, but really.
The thread where people talked about using bath towels multiple times to rub themselves down, and would only wash them after multiple uses. Kind of gross.
I find it jaw dropping how many people on the board are quick to recommend law suits and pressing charges over what would, to me, be very minor events or incidents.
Then I remind myself that it’s an anonymous messageboard and most people are a little more keyed up when no one knows who they are than they would be in real life. I hope.
My now super-successful mother did three washer loads a day largely caused by all types of towels that our family used. They were considered single use. Now that I am grown with a family of my own, there is no way that we are doing that. Bathroom towels are used when the person is the most clean that they will be all day. There isn’t much downside to that considering everything else we will be exposed to all day. Our immune systems are in fully functional status and I have never been told that I smell at all.
