What unusual cars have you seen lately?

This morning on the way to work I saw a white mid-1960s Mercedes Benz convertible (I don’t know the model) with right-hand drive. (Okay, RHD might not seem unusual in London or someplace; but you don’t see it often here!)

Saw a blood red '62 Pontiac Catalina 2+2 while waiting for my bus this afternoon.

Has anyone seen the new Maserati commercial?

I saw a strange car in Key West, believe it or not. It was actually a boat they had chopped the bottom out of and placed it on a car chassis. Imagine my surprise when I turned to see a boat driving down the middle of Duval street. Well, not all that surprising really, a rather mundane experience for Key West standards.

Reminds me of a tour company around here called DC Ducks, they offer monument tours from a unique perspective - the Potomac River!

On my way to work, I spotted a 1937 Cord 812 Beverley. It was on a trailer and obviously in the process of being restored.

About 3 weeks ago while on I-10 approaching El Paso, I saw a Bugatti type 35 on a trailer. I don’t know if it was real or a replica. It was headed East and I was going West so I didn’t get a good look.

Around 1986 I saw a white custom Chevette pickup parked on Tichester Road in Toronto.

I was startled by the sight of a Chevrolet “Slingshot” as I drove by a local car dealership, recently. Until then, I didn’t even know that they existed. It was like running across a time-traveler.

And…someone in my town apparently owns a Model-T Ford, and actually uses it to drive around in, not just for car shows. I’ve seen it parked outside the Drug Store, and the Realtor’s Office. Never seen it driving, though. (Not yet, at least.)

I know a guy who has a 1925 Packard and drives it everywhere, including 800 miles to a car show in Talahassee, where that picture was taken. It’s a lot bigger than that picture makes it look.

Texas DPS has a few Camaros. They used to have Mustangs, but the '94 and later ones couldn’t cruise at 140+mph. All the troopers I’ve talked to preferred the Mustang, because it handled better.

That is one sweet lookin’ Packard. If your friend doesn’t have a copy of The Fall of the Packard Motor Car Company by James A. Ward, I suggest you get him one. It’s a great read, and shows how tragic the loss of Packard was (and how the blame lies almost solely with Eisenhower).

I saw a military jeep today on the road. I believe it was an M151. Very rare to see those nowadays…

I’ve actually been in one of those, some friends of ours owned one in the mid 1970s in upstate New York. Easily qualifies as the most unusual car I have ever ridden in.
Somebody at my company has been driving in in a Lamborghini Espada similar to the one pictured.
Very, very similar.

Kind of funny seeing it parked out there among all the Camrys and Civics.

You like weird cars? I give you weird cars. About twelve years ago I found one of these: www.imperialclub.com/ Yr/1941/thunderbolt/ in a garage out by the Mexico City airport. No idea how it got to Mexico in the first place. A client bought it, I did some restoration and then shipped it (by air, which is a whole other story) to Boston; the buyer died suddenly without a will and his three ex-wives started fighting. As far as I know the Thunderbolt is still in some lawyer´s garage in Marblehead, which means that where they say önly four exist today¨there are really five.

Man, I bet it’s a bitch to change the tires on the Thunderbolt. Working link

Yes, indeed Johnny. I believe it was an M151 jeep that I saw today. …

Oh, and the other day I saw a small Datsun convertible similar to the ones pictured at the top of this page:

Unfortunately I didn’t get a good enough look to really nail it down but I am leaning towards it being the 1600.

Were these cars widely sold in the US? I don’t think I’ve ever seen one before.

I don’t know how “widely sold” they were in the U.S., but they were available here. My parents thought of getting one, but they thought it sounded “tinny” so they bought an MGB instead. I’ve seen a few around in SoCal.

Actually the linked page says something about all the East Coast ones rusting out. That is probably why I’ve never seen one.
