What was a "clock boy"

Reading this wikipedia articleabout children’s right, I saw a picture titled “A boy working as a “clock boy” on the streets of Merida, Mexico” ? I’ve never heard of “clockboys”.
What were these kids paid for? Was it just a way to advertize for local watchmakers or is there more to it?

Sorry, I intended to post this in GQ, not GD. Could a mod kindly move the thread?

Let’s just say he’ll . . . clean your clock.

Off to GQ.

The picture is also used in the French Wikipedia in the article on Homme-sandwich – which translated into English is “sandwich man”, not “man sandwich”. A sandwich man carries sandwich boards advertising something.

And probably comes cheaper than a man sandwich.

I question the OP’s use of the past tense. That picture was clearly taken relatively recently, based on one of the vehicles present. (The on the image’s page says 2006, but it’s not clear if that was when it was taken, or when it went up, or what.) So there’s no reason to assume ‘clock boys’ are a thing of the past.

More to it, looking carefully at the text one can see descriptions of bracelets and gold chains (10K and 14K) besides watches for sale, (now I know where my relatives got that fake Rolex they wanted to give me one day  ) the bottom line refers to instant credit being offered, clearly what is not pictured is his box with products ready to be uncovered when a customer approaches, the time being offered by the clock boy is just a bonus and an advertising bit.

Does a clock-boy give handjobs?

His pet is a watchdog.

Only if you come in seconds.

Well, thank both of you so much for launching a Rule 34 version of Phantom Tollbooth in my head…

Whatever’s going on in your vision, make sure to work the Humbug into it somehow. He never gets enough love.

Phrasing!
