What was Gomez Addams?

Uncle Fester lit light bulbs in his mouth. I’m not sure where the OP got the idea he was a hunchback. I was just rolling with it, but now I don’t think he was.

IIRC they never gave much backstory on any of the family members. They were just this odd famly.
They’re creepy and they’re kooky, mysterious and spooky. They’re Altogether ooky the Addams Family.

Whenever I think of an eccentric millionaire, I think of Gomez.

I agree with Amateur about the Muenster’s theme song. It’s a catchier a tune. But that was the only thing about the show that I really liked.

For certain definitions of sexy and certain versions of Morticia, perhaps. Carolyn Jones Morticia yes, Anjelica Huston Morticia, yes but less so. All other Morticias…no.

I did not know until this moment that there had been six Lily Munsters!

I am familiar only with Yvonne De Carlo’s Lily. That Lily was not an overtly sexual character and had a very modest costume. The other actresses were all attractive women, were their versions of Lily amped up sexually over the original as Anjelica Morticia was over Carolyn Morticia?

Portia Rossi appears to have been a rather sexy Lily…

Lurch is the most!

While he may have been the most “normal” looking one Gomez IMO was the most overtly mentally offbeat character on the show. Money meant nothing to him, he was a financial genius with endless resources, a lover of destruction for it’s own sake and his mood would turn on a dime.

Will Smith? Or Hammer?

The Munsters were literally characters out of the Universal Monsters franchise.

The Addamses were more subtle. They were the seemingly respectable neighbors whom you suspected might harbor dark secrets.
Gomez was the wealthy gentleman you suspected of being a serial killer.
Morticia was the woman you suspected of being a black widow.
Uncle Fester was the guy you suspected was a pedophile.
Pugsley was the maladjusted kid who broke your toys, and whom you suspected when your pets disappeared.

Lurch was the goon who broke legs and dumped people in the river.
Grandmama was the crazy old neighbor lady who was possibly a cannibal.

And Wednesday? What/who was Wednesday?

See, now if the tv shows and movies had run with this take on things, the franchise would actually deserve its reputation for being dark and subversive. As it stands, the Jones/Astin and Julia/Huston chemistry is 90% of what is good about The Addams Family.

The 1313 Mockingbird Lane re-imagining of The Munsters with Portia Rossi as Lily to which I linked above seems to have been a genuinely dark take on that franchise…and it has no better than a cult following. I suspect a truly dark and subversive version of The Addams Family would fare no better.

She was an awesome dance instructor.

Nice!

But I meant in the spirit of the descriptions by mbh and Lumpy, what were her quirks and peculiarities? Or was she <shudder> normal?

Lizzie Borden - without the axe.

Wednesday was the one who really killed your pets.

Wednesday was the shy, quiet girl who kept to herself. When you first met her, you suspected her parents were abusing her. When you got to know her better, you suspected she was abusing them.

At least in the cartoons Wednesday was more waif-like. She was the Little Girl Lost In Monsterland.

Her name comes from this poem:

She especially enjoyed playing with her Marie Antoinette doll.

Per Wiki:

She was married to a porn star named Jerry butler, and did makeup for them, I think. The question was how close she was to the action.
