What was the last movie you saw that made you say "WTF?"

“Wilhelm Reich: Mystery of the Organism” left me confused, not least because they translated “orgasm” to “organism”

Futz.

The last one I saw for the first time is Men, and as already mentioned, it is a whole lot of strange. This past weekend I rewatched Mulholland Drive for the first time in several years. I have a pretty good handle on it now, after having read many explanations and theories, but when I saw it the first time it was one big, resounding WTF.???

The Lighthouse. Incredibly beautiful cinematography, Willem Dafoe chewing up the scenery, but came out of the theater with an absolute WTF feeling. Not that there’s anything wrong with that, sometime WTF is a good thing.

I joke that the movie is not believable in any way. Who really thinks that Scarlett Johansson could lure random men into her van to have sex with her. I mean really.

One that I would mention is “Holy Motors” (2012). It was fascinating to watch, but I have no idea what was going on.

Licorice Pizza.

Watched it earlier this year with 3 other adults, knowing it had been nominated for best pic. Not one of us had any idea what we had just watched. Kinda started off as an interesting portrayal of the time of our youth, but never went anywhere (that was of interest to any of us), and kept tossing in weird bits for no apparent reason.

I know some folk around here this it was great.

A documentary I watched recently pointed out that, in fact, many of the encounters were with non-actors, who weren’t aware that they were in a movie scene (not the key, extended encounters).

I got the DVD from the library, and made it about 15 minutes in. I had the same reaction to “LaLa Land.”

LaLa Land wasn’t WTF. It was just very mediocre.

I will admit, Orphan: First Kill may not be a great movie, but it certainly made me say WTF or at least come close just about half-way through it. I kind of love it just for having the guts to go there.

Oprah, first kill would be good also.

The idea that Scarlett Johansson would lure men into a van to have sex with her seemed ridiculous until she married Colin Jost.

I can’t remember a recent movie that left me scratching my head, but Boxing Helena - Wikipedia seriously made me wonder what in the world I had watched. There were a few parts of Everything Everywhere All at Once - Wikipedia that made me go wtf, but it all was part of the wackiness of the movie so it fit rather than made want to throw up my hands.

The wraith.

It was visually stunning, even on TV, but that was about it.

I’ll nominate Repo Man from 1984 starring Emilio Estevez and Harry Dean Stanton. Estevez plays a young punk rocker whose forced to get a job after his parents send his college fund to a televangelist. He hooks up with an older repo man played by Stanton who shows him the ropes. During the course of the movie, they try to repossess a classic car that’s carrying some sort of alien technology in the trunk. I think my first WTF moment was a scene where all the consumer products were just white with big block letters reading chips, beer, or whatever was supposed to be inside it.

Generic packaging was real, you know. They didn’t invent it for the movie.

I think the “WTF” moment was that ALL the products in the store were generic.

That was the joke, yes, along with the extreme genericness of some of the labels (“food,” “snacks”), but Odesio’s post seemed surprised at the idea of generic packaging at all.

It’s entirely possible that @Odesio isn’t old enough to remember generic packaging. Store brands took over that niche after a relatively short run. I’m 62 and barely remember generics.
