What was the "NRA?"

Not the “National Rifle Association.”

I’ve seen the NRA logo on the opening credits in some old (1930s) movies, and I’ve recently seen a movie set in the 1930s that had sheets posted on utility poles with the NRA logo, which is some stylized eagle.

Any ideas???

NRA = National Recovery Act, part of the New Deal.

National Recovery Administration, created under the National Industrial Recovery Act in 1933 and abolished on Jan. 1, 1936. It was found by the Supreme Court in Schechter v. United States to be an unconstitutional delegation of legislative power.

Thank you for correcting me, Bibliophage, you are absolutely right. I can never remember if both the NRA and NIRA are acts, organisations, or what.

The Schechter decision was often referred to as “The Sick Chicken Case.”

I just felt the need to state that. Sorry.

The “Blue Eagle;” part of the National Recovery Administration, it was a largely ineffectual program of price supports, and a pain in the ass for everyone involved.

But, with ~25 per cent unemployment during those years, you can’t really fault the roosevelt administration for trying something.
