I don’t remember my first VHS purchase, but my first DVD purchase was the Stanley Kubrick version of The Shining.
I must have made more than 200 VHS tapes off the TV before I bought a prerecorded tape. Possibly my first VHS was “The Rutles: All You Need Is Cash.”
My first two DVDs came on the day when we bought our player: “The Man With The Golden Arm” and Steely Dan: “The Making Of Aja”.
First movie I bought on tape was Star Wars—on BETA! First DVD I bought was The Matrix. In fact, it was why I bought a DVD player in the first place.
VHS-Empire Strikes Back
DVD-Galaxy Quest
VHS - Labyrinth. I bought it in 1989 at a huge flea market in Ohio.
DVD - Mars Attacks! I used it as my demo in the home entertainment room at Circuit City.
I’m assuming all those blank cassettes I bought to tape Days of Our Lives back in the days of Patch/Kayla and Shane/Kimberly don’t count?
I think my first with-my-own-money VHS purchase was the re-release of the Star Wars trilogy immediately preceeding the Special Editions. Of course, I then had to buy the Special Editions as well.
My first DVD purchase was not really my choice. When I bought my player I got a choice of any that the store had in stock. At this time, way back in 1997, there were only about 10 movies available, and the one I really wanted (Batman) was out of stock. So I got Jerry Maguire. The next day I went to another store and bought Batman. So it was my first choice, but my second actual DVD.
My first CD was a CD single of Vanessa Williams. Saved the best for last? A couple of weeks later I bought a CD player, and picked up Prince’s Diamonds and Pearls album at the same time.
First DVD: Batman (the Tim Burton one). I got a DVD player for my PC relatively early in the format’s lifetime, and that was the only movie for sale that I considered a must-own.
First casette tape: Weird Al Yankovic in 3D
I had a VCR for years but I always rented and never bought tapes. But I broke down when I was in this comic book store and saw they had some video collections of pre-WWII cartoons on sale. Of course, as I knew would happen, once I bought a first tape I ended up buying hundreds.
I bought a DVD player about four years ago. I got it with a promotion that gave me five free DVD’s but I don’t really count them. But after buying them I was in a Media Play store and saw that Mr Vampire (a Chinese horror comedy) was available on DVD. I always wanted a copy so I bought it.
I have never bought a movie on VHS. I own plenty of them, but they were all gifts. My first DVD purchase was Ranma 1/2 The Movie 2 (yes, it’s actually called that, and yes, every single one of my friends did make the joke that they should’ve just multiplied and called it Ranma The Movie…we’re a geeky crowd). The only DVDs I buy are anime, because they cannot generally be rented. I did make an exception, however, for Jackie Chan’s “New Fist of Fury”, because any movie that costs four dollars in which Jackie Chan plays a character named “A Lung” is incontrovertibly worth owning.
First VHS: Blackadder II
First DVD: The Jerk
I have never bought a VHS tape but inherited quite a few. My first DVD was The Secret of NIMH . I love that movie!
First VHS was only a few years ago, I found Catch Me if You Can on sale for only $5.
First DVD was just this year! I’m behind the times obviously. I got the Lord of The Rings Trilogy and The Big Lebowski.
First CD was not until 1994 I believe, and I got Pork Soda by Primus.
I think the very first VHS purchase I made might have been the only VHS purchase I’ve ever made, which was Titanic believe it or not. I never bought VHS tapes. My parents bought tons, but I never felt like building a collection. Titanic was in the grocery store and I thought ‘what the hell.’
My first DVD purchase was Saving Private Ryan, which I got about 3 days before I got my first DVD player. Since then, I’ve built up quite a collection. I’ve got 106 movies, 25 TV series seasons and a few others.
I can’t remember my first VHS purchase. Lotta water’s been under the bridge since then.
But I do remember my first DVDs. I was an early adopter, and on the same day that I plunked down $500 for my first DVD player, I also bought three movies off the tiny in-the-aisle DVD rack that was all the store had at that time. The three movies I bought were Scream, Runaway Train, and Twister (because back then you pretty much HAD to have Twister if you had a DVD player).
It’s funny to think back on all the special offers there used to be to promote the new technology of DVD. Remember Warner’s “mail in 4 proofs of purchase, get a free movie” deals? Or 800.com’s “3 DVDs for $1, shipping included”?
VHS- tho they were gifts, they were requested by me (I was newly out of college)- A CLOCKWORK ORANGE and REANIMATOR
DVD- TRUE ROMANCE
Both video & DVD purchases were before we had video or DVD players L
First VHS - A Charlie Brown Christmas. It was a giveaway with purchase at a gas station chain I didn’t normally go to, and I went there specifically to get it.
The first VHS I actually bought IIRC was “A Man For All Seasons” (Scofield)
First DVD - Beany and Cecil Special Edition, because it had 4 episodes of the original show and recorded reminiscences from Stan Freberg, Clampett and some others.
I know the OP didn’t ask, but -
First CD - “Amahl and the Night Visitors” (original cast).
First LP - Grieg Piano Concerto, Artur Rubinstein.
Anybody wanna chime in with first cassette, 8-track, 45 or maybe even 78? How about pre-recorded reel-to-reel tape? I did buy a few, but I’m not sure which was first, possibly “Switched-on Bach”. We had a relative who worked for RCA, and we got 20 or 30 half-track stereo tapes through her cheap, one of which was the famous CSO/Reiner “Also Sprach Zarathustra”.
