What were you THINKING?

Maybe the point I am about to make would be more appropriate in one of the 2 top subforums, but I sure wish when we went to Discourse that the unread public thread bookmarks were all set to read. I hate seeing a rezzed zombie thread, which will invariably begin at the OP, scrolling down to the end, noticing a bunch of new posts before that, and having to furiously backtrack to find the actual new post.

I too dismiss a lot of threads as of no or only marginal interest, and don’t follow them. Most of these I expect to burn out quickly, but occasionally one does go on and on, and so I will tune in after a while to see what they’re still discussing. It was by doing this, for example, that I discovered that @Stranger_On_A_Train had sloped off after coming a cropper in a pit thread they started. There have been a number of other instances where seemingly thin threads end up developing interesting, well, developments, that have been worth it to me to peruse.

Yeah, I sometimes click on a thread that I either ignored when it first came up or glanced at briefly and then stopped reading, in order to see why it’s still going after so many posts. Sometimes it’s digressed into something I find interesting; or, if I’d ignored it the first time, sometimes I’d misunderstood what it’s about.

Also, I haven’t seen here forever. Sometimes a long old thread last previously surfaced before I showed up.

I do that too. Just not very often.

For threads someone comes to late my own POV is

  • For <100 posts, read 'em all or don’t post.
  • For a couple hundred and up, read the first couple dozen and the last couple weeks’ before posting. And preface your comments with “I read the last [whatever], not the whole thread.”

Aaaccccckkk. Too many rules for conversation.

If this, imagined topic, is your pet project or your superior knowledge makes you know everything there is to know, ummm..why exactly are you making a FQ about it? Do you want a questioned answered? Or are you just sneak bragging your expertise?

(You, as in the everyman you).

I really hate that.

Yeah, i rarely read that much when i come upon a long thread. Maybe the first dozen and the last 50, it the last few day’s worth.

Of course, i rarely bother to read a thread if it has more than 50 unread posts in it. That means i drop some very busy threads, as well as not picking up old ones. This is the place where i most miss having defined pages. I used to find it easy enough to skim old pages, and i was okay with 5-10 unread pages (which is a lot more than 50 posts). Now it just seems too overwhelming. So i drop threads.

If you say that out loud, how do you pronounce all of those extra "c"s and “k”? Seems like it would be hard on the throat.

It is.

But more hard on my brain.

Sometimes I say “becccccckkkkk”

Same difference. :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

Tip: See the scrollbar to the right of the posts, that says what post you’re on, and the date it was made? Grab that scrollbar, and move it up and down. Move it until you see it transitioning from an old date to a recent one.

That’s literally what I do. It even works on a mobile device; it’s a little more awkward than with a mouse, but still works.

Just me, or was Whack-a-Mole being decidedly unhinged in that (now closed) ATMB thread about their hijack of the “Who married you” thread?

Yeah, that seemed unlike him, at least as far as my interactions with him have gone. “But this is really important!”

He does get stuck sometimes on his definition being the only one (e.g. “classic rock”) but this one was OTT even for him. I mean, the OP had already apologized and explained what they meant.

That was really giving me “I’m a botanist, and I’m telling you chef, that eggplant is a FRUIT not a vegetable!” vibes.

Do you not remember the ‘uppity’ thread? He is frequently an asshole.

I’m gonna bet there was something there that was triggering his religion. IOW, it’s vitally important to him that the correct term be used for his clergy. When somebody else’s term was used as the generic, that lit his fire and he was off to the races.

Speaking about me: I can get short and testy late at night after a few. And certainly have here more than once. But I usually recover my composure and proportion in the morning.

Staying testy for a day or more is a whole different mental state.

And that’s unhinged.

He was clearly unhappy that he was being asked to answer a poll that had improper language. And i think he was also unhappy with the language of my moderation. I kinda side with Humpty Dumpty: words mean what i want them to mean. (Or, since communication is actually a two way street, what we mutually agree they mean.) But i suppose a prescriptivist can be annoyed by that attitude.

But yes, his reaction was weirdly over the top.

It struck me as odd too because I don’t think of a rabbi as a “minister” but it was very clear that the OP meant “member of the clergy” and I moved on. It was unimportant to the thread which has become very interesting.

Here’s a thread where Whacky was modded for threadshitting and he said that he wasn’t because he defines threadshitting in a different way than the rules here do for over twenty years.

Geez, and I thought this ‘minister’ one was unhinged…
