Exactly.
But aye there’s the point.
Anyway. You’ve participated in the thread. And your perspective of disliking strength training but doing it anyway, utilizing the social contract of a hired trainer to keep you at it, is understood and appreciated as a perspective.
I thought the title was an attempt to grab your attention, but the actual OP made it clear what he was really getting at. People often have surprising or provocative titles here, but then you read the OP and it all makes sense. Hard to imagine how anyone would be offended once they actually read the OP, unless they were looking to be offended.
That can work, and be fun for all involved.
I am opposed to “clickbait” type thread titles, though. Not that they are a problem here now. It was worse in past years.
There used to be a poster who was a repeat offender in that regard - they would post thread titles like, “I caught my husband sleeping with another female” and then the OP would be something like “our daughter fell asleep on her dad’s arm during a long airplane ride, adorable, no?”
Okay, cute enough in infrequent doses, but this particular poster did it All. The. Time. The overall impression it left was an annoying sort of “look at MEEEE!!! look at MEEEE!!!” In my case it backfired; I refused to click on any thread started by that person.
I wasn’t offended. It’s just that a provocative title invites a provocative, snarky response. I responded that if I need something heavy lifted I’ll pay someone to do it. Another poster was more witty, and said that they don’t lift weights because they’re too damn heavy!
There’s also a mindset issue. I’m sick to death of being lectured about the value of exercise. To me, the very term “exercise” evokes an image of a stationary bike. To some, this may say “person wisely staying in shape”. But since reasonable people typically use motorized vehicles even when they’re actually going someplace, I can’t shed the notion (please note that I’m mostly joking here) that when you pedal furiously to go nowhere at all, the more appropriate appellation might be “imbecile”. ![]()
Oh, I kid, I kid. I understand the point of exercise. I even understand how vital it is as one gets older. But I still get tired of the lectures, so whenever I see “why don’t you [do this exercise]” my almost automatic involuntary response is “why don’t you just fuck right off”.
I’m fine with catchy thread titles.
Either way if it grabs you to read the OP, and the thread, why not?
I don’t like the idea people won’t make a thread because it might accidentally insult someone’s principles or ouch their feels.
New, fresh threads are always gonna be needed.
One more colonoscopy thread and I may go jump off a bridge tho’.
It better have a clever thread title, just saying. ![]()
Thank you. As a kid who hated gym class when all we ever did was run, play soccer (which involved running), run, play basketball (which involved running) and run some more, the idea of lifting weights just reminds me of yet more physical exertion which doesn’t accomplish anything.
I accomplished things and got enough exercise from jobs I had. You try moving 48,000 pounds of empty beer cases a night, by hand. I did. I could handle a 1200-pound horse, if it wasn’t willing to be cooperative; and if it stepped on me, well, I always wore steel toed boots. Crank a trailer (as in tractor-trailer) up far enough that you can disengage the fifth-wheel lock. I have.
These are things that weightlifters have no knowledge about. But that require weighlifting.
I’ve stayed out of that thread, because weightlifting using barbells and so on doesn’t interest me. But I had to look in after the recent kerfuffle.
Meh. Still doesn’t interest me.
So you’re saying the next colonoscopy OP oughta stuff it up their ass instead? ![]()
Our friend billy-jack is declaring that conservatives are liberal and equal rights are discrimination over in the SRIofD thread.
I mean, it’s the Pit so it’s not technically trolling but wow.
Or the short form title of the BBC kid’s show Why Don’t You Just Switch Off Your Television Set and Go and Do Something Less Boring Instead?
I don’t recognize him. Does he post normal stuff on other threads?
Not that I’ve ever noticed. Just another garden variety Fascist in libertarian clothing as far as I can tell.
So, not really prime content for this thread…
Maybe I’ll nominate myself, for apparently sowing a lot of confusion by posting about “only fans” instead of “OnlyFans”.
If he hangs around much longer I predict he’ll be appearing in the trolls thread.
So I’m slow, which thread is the SRIofD thread?
He said it is in the pit and I can’t locate one that matches.

ETA: Sorry, didn’t really mean to quote @JRDelirious.
And it was the word “NEW” at the front that threw me off.
Thnaks all.
I thought this as good a place as any to post what I intend to be my final post on these boards. I thank everyone associated with these boards for providing and contributing to this community. These boards meant a lot to me over the years. They allowed me to express and think through many of my views, exposed me to persons situated and thinking differently than most I meet IRL, and helped me examine and change my opinions on several matters large and small. For that, I thank you. For a combination of reasons, I have just decided that this is not where I desire to spend my time going forward.
This is not intended as criticism of the boards, any moderation, or any poster(s). While a couple of recent threads likely helped me reach this decision, this is not in response to an specific occurrence. This simply reflects what I have decided is best for me. Given the stressors I perceive in modern US society, and my planning for retirement next year, I have been deciding where I most wish to spend my time and expend my efforts. Given my personal experience - such as with cigarettes and alcohol in the past, I have decided that it is easier for me to quit these boards altogether, rather than attempt to moderate my activity.
I certainly do not wish this to turn into any extended departure discussion. I just thought that after more than 2 decades of somewhat active posting you all deserved the respect of a goodbye, rather than a silent disappearance.
I truly wish everyone associated with these boards the happiest and most fulfilling lives possible, and I hope these boards thrive for another several decades.
I hope you reconsider, Dinsdale. I’ve enjoyed your posts.
