Fury? lol get over yourself
What are WE thinking?
Seriously.
I’m thinking about dinner.
“This is the Pit, so call me whatever you want, but don’t call me late for dinner!”
I made shrimp scampi with pasta and a salad. I welcome the immigrant cuisine! ![]()
Are we having humble pie for dessert?
Triflin’ Crabapple
Okay then. Per the rules, you need to clearly identify any time you are posting content from AI, which you did not do, and that’s why I originally asked you.
https://boards.straightdope.com/tos
Artificial intelligence (AI). AI-generated responses must be clearly marked as such. Do not use AI to generate entire posts. AI responses are often unreliable – if you use them as the primary source for your assertions, you’re likely to get a lot of flak on this board.
I wasn’t even trying to bring it up as a junior mod or anything, just trying to make sure, because it matters. Nor did I report you, because I wasn’t trying to be a rules lawyer or anything.
No, it’s not a “distinction without a difference”, you need to identify when something is from AI. Don’t be an asshole.
You probably should have. Arguments about rules are best settled by the moderators that apply the rules. And frankly, there’s too much cavalier mishandling of AI responses here.
I wasn’t even just trying to argue about the rules, so much as clarify what was being posted, and then my other response was to justify why I asked it.
If I wanted to argue about the rules, I’d probably just do so in ATMB. My concern wasn’t really a rules violation, and I’m only mentioning the rule to show that I’m not just “nitpicking” in asking. We, as a community, care if you are getting something from AI, and I’m part of that community.
ETA: In retrospect, I should have reported though. Because we should probably report when we see a rules violation, even if we don’t think mod action is needed, as that judgement is for mods to make, not us. I’ll own that mistake.
ETA2: There was a note for personal attack, and I definitely didn’t report that. To be honest, it didn’t even register as one to me. I must be getting pretty jaded.
It wasn’t meant as a personal attack. My entire point was that, if you felt that I had transgressed the rules, intentionally or otherwise, maybe you should have made that point in your post, rather than the way you did, which sounded accusatorial and snide.
You made no reference to anything even approaching something with a reference that I could look at. You just decided to call me out on something without explaining exactly what your problem was.
In other words, you dropped a vague line and expected me to do the legwork to see what the fuck you were talking about.
And your response to me seemed to be personal in nature, so I responded in kind (personally, I don’t think it warranted mod intervention, but I can’t be arsed to make an issue out of it).
I have no personal animus towards you. But if you come across as accusatory and aggressively nitpicky, I’m going to respond.
I’m glad I didn’t take it as one then, and I’m not mad at you about it. ![]()
I just wanted to know if you were quoting AI. I didn’t think that was vague. I literally just asked if it was AI. Direct quote:
Do you mean Google’s AI?
That’s it.
I’m really sorry, I didn’t mean it to be personal, I just wanted to point out why the answer mattered. And I wasn’t asking it as a “gotcha” based on rules or anything, it’s just that I wanted to know if you were posting stuff from AI or if it was coming from a different source. And ultimately, you did post good answers, and had good cites. Having them in the middle of unlabeled AI was confusing, that’s all.
I honestly wasn’t trying to be confrontational either, and I don’t dislike you at all and wasn’t trying to start anything.
No harm, no foul. We’re good.
Yaay! The THINKING thread does its job sucessfully again.
Good on ya’ both!
In what world is “you have a stick up your ass” not a personal attack?
The one I live in. Apparently not everyone else lives there with me.
Especially your electronic pal:
Me: in an online forum, would telling someone " get that stick out of your ass" constitute a personal attack?
Google Ai response:
Yes, in virtually any moderated online forum, telling someone to “get that stick out of your ass” would be classified as a personal attack. While it is a common idiom, here is why forum moderators and community guidelines generally flag it:
Focuses on the person, not the point: Instead of addressing the actual argument, topic, or data being discussed, this phrase attacks the individual’s personality or attitude—suggesting they are overly rigid, humorless, or uptight.
Hostile and vulgar tone: The phrase is inherently aggressive and uses vulgarity. Most online communities have “be respectful” or “keep it civil” rules that automatically ban this kind of language.
Dismissive nature: It acts as a conversational derailment, shifting the focus from a productive discussion to a personal conflict.
The Only Exception:
The only time this wouldn’t be flagged as an attack is if it occurs in a highly informal, unmoderated space, or as clear, playful banter between two users who have an established, friendly relationship. However, as a general rule of thumb for public forums, it crosses the line into a personal attack.
Watch out everyone, the hall monitor is on the warpath.
Now I expect @manhattan to come back after a long hiatus to make clear who really is the hall monitor…
