What will work as a good free standing barrier against infants/toddlers?

Yes – this is exactly the product I was looking for. If you can find it in a pet supplies catalog (and I’ve seen it in some pet catalog recently), it will cost you about half as much for exactly the same thing. We had two sets when our twins were little. It’s a remarkable product.

Here it is, still on Amazon and still listed as a child product, for way less:

…and after the kid is grown up, such fences do double duty to keep their pet rabbit contained on the lawn. They also come in handy to put the raked leaves in. I bought something similar to use as fence around my compost heap in my back yard. The mulch has to keep in touch with the ground, after all.

Add us to the list of folks using one of these for exactly the reason the OP wants something for. During the NorthEast Ice storm of 2008, we had to keep the woodstove lit for the first time since the Butlerette (now nearly 4) was born. Worked great, was easy to move or step over so that we could reload the 1st floor’s woodstove. We also have the raised brick area, but were never worried about a child being damaged from that, as it’s in the unused room on our 1st floor.

Check on Craigslist for one, it’s where ours would have been shortly, if we weren’t keeping it for around the woodstove over the next few years.
