What would be the worst way to die?

You’re just an average guy. You have a wife, a minivan, 2.5 kids and a hardwood floor. You work hard, pay your taxes, and respect the flag of your great country (whatever that country may be.) One day some sick, twisted psychopath comes along and drugs you in your sleep for absolutely no reason other than that he’s a sick, twisted psychopath.

You awake sealed up in a brick wall. One brick has been left out, just below your eye level, around your nose. From the little bit you can see it seems like you’re in a basement. Far to the left is a staircase that leads up to a half-open door, pooring in the slightest bit of soft yellow light. Your field of vision is seriously impaired due to the unfortunate position of the missing brick and you can make out little more in the mostly dark basement besides a few vague shapes.

Once a day a man brings you just enough food and water to keep you alive, which you eat only on the hope that you will soon be released from this hellish cell.

Your legs in general, especially your hips, are terribly stiff and sore from the turned-out placement of your feet, but trying in vain to move them only increases the pain. You entire body aches as you stand upright day after day, physically unable to sit or squat or afford yourself any relief, even temporary, owing to the incredibly limited space at your disposal. Your toes begin to itch. Then your face, your scalp, your legs. Soon your entire body is on fire with a desperate urge to be scratched but your hands, pinned flat against your sides, are almost completely immobile.

One day, long after your physical and mental breaking point, the door at the top of the staircase slowly closes. You are now in complete darkness, and your food is never brought to you again.

I’d question your sanity [for coming up with this thread] Cisco if it wasn’t for the fact that I know most of us could come up with worse ways to die, based on our individual feard and phobias (like a personal ‘favourite’ - having your toenails pulled off, then your fingernails, then having your eyes pulled out…)
Incedentaly - where did that thread come from? (in your head). Is it the way iraqi people were treated or something?

Nope. Was lying in bed and started thinking of this for some reason. It disturbed me to the point where my legs were tensing up and I started feeling physically naseous and panicky. I had to get up and type it out and now I can’t sleep.

Alone, unloved & friendless.

I think buried alive in a coffin in the ground would do it for me…terrors! Or if someone were to administer succinylcholine, where I am mentally aware and alert but cannot move any part of my body while I suffocate. Ok, I watch Forensic Files entirely too much, Margo

You reject the advances of a surgeon, who abducts you and starts taking bits and pieces off your body, cooking them, and giving them to you as the only thing you have to eat.

And you thought King’s “Survivor Type” was bad.

The only thing I can think of that would be worse, IMO, than drowning (a fear of mine) would be to be eaten alive from the inside out.

Suppose some sick freak forces you to ingest a small sac containing thousands of fire ants. In due time, the ants will eat their way through the sac, and then start on your stomach. Eck!

I think the ‘Sloth’ victim in Se7en had possibly the worst, prolonged death you could imagine.

Ewww, yeah, I’d have to agree. I was going to say death by defecation, but now I think that pales in comparison to what you’ve suggested…

For my answer, I direct you to the Mongolian section of The Wind-up Bird Chronicle by Haruki Murakami.

:runs away:

That is without a doubt the worst way to live, but depending on how long you lived like this, the actual death would probably be satisfying.

Although Cisco’s method of death is indeed creative, I’d still have to say that the worst way to die would be drowning.

Burned alive while conscious

Suffication - slowly realizing that last breath you took WAS your last, and not being able to breathe again

Ok that’s it - I’d like to be blissfully unconscious for the rest of my life… just in case.

I’ve heard that drowning might not be too bad. Reports from people who have almost drowned seem to indicate that once you’ve inhaled the water it’s quite peaceful.

I’m fairly certain that being skinned alive would be freakishly painful. Like burning, but without the nerves themselves being damaged. shudder

Not to be morbid or anything, but drowning is actually quite pleasent, people only think it is aweful because you can feel yourself dying and know you only have minutes to live.

The reason I say this, is because when I was a grad student I did quite a bit of research on death and dying. There is a staggering amount of evidence from people who have died and come back say it was quite a pleasent experience. Scant few people say they had a horrible experience.

I worked in a hospice center when I was doing the research and people who were in coma’s and ame out, or people who were in one way or another catatonic say the feeling is quite nice, and for those who died and came back, they say it was one of the most pleasurable experiences they have ever had. Some noted they could not wait to die again, and they were only back because they had family members who loved them.

I am mentioning all of this, because the OP is written about how horrific a death one could have, and I wanted to put my 2 cents in that some forms of death are actually quite pleasurable. There is a biological reaction with-in ones brain when they die, I do not want to botch the name of the hormone, but it involves your pleasure centers, and eases the transition.

BTW, I’d hate to be eaten alive by a wild animal, thank the universe for providing humans with a sensory gating system…

Eating a pound or two of unpopped popcorn and taking a nap wrapped in an electric blanket.

POP:eek:

I’ve always thought that burning would be one of the worst ways to go.

Being smothered to death by Robin Leech’s voluptuous man-teats would pretty much suck.

It’s like God giving you a warm watery hug – forever!

I’ve always thought that being crushed to death had to be one of the most unpleasant deaths imaginable. Whether it be from, say, a cave-in, or the old execution practice of being “pressed” (rocks piled on you), it just seems incredibly nasty. Unbearable squishing, organs bursting, air being squeezed out of you…ugh.
