If I woke up one morning, logged on and read an OP that said:
“As part of Texas History Month, I’m thinking of putting a Ford 351 Cleveland engine in my 1960’s chopper. How will this affect its performance in a hurricane, and are there any theological, alt sexual or cultural implications to my doing so?”
…I think my head would explode.
So, what would the OP that hit all of your buttons look like?
“Excuse me, I was wondering if anyone could outline a structure of introspective thought process/belief system analysis for me. More specifically, I’m looking for something of the sort that was first conceptualized by Carl Jung, but taken a step further; more ideological, which paradoxically lends itself to a less idealistic conclusion. The result of this system should be something akin to Jungian/Janovian self-awareness, as partially expressed by, say, Roland Orzabal of Tears For Fears. While you’re at it, recommend some good music for me; something with subtle and intricate layers of complexity that interact with each other in much the same way as my thoughts themselves intertwine in my subconscious. Oh, and one more thing: what the heck is up with people who insist that individual beliefs should be based solely on practicality-focused conclusions taken from one’s own life experiences? Don’t they realize that all that accomplishes is generation of random viewpoints that don’t coalesce into any kind of coherent philosophy, and will more often than not contradict each other to the point of rendering the person’s whole standpoint meaninglessness? Does this seem odd to anyone else?”
“I’d like real information on neo-paganism as it differs and relates to portrayals of Wicca on Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Also, information on herbal medicine and early child care, breastfeeding a plus, but without the dogma of LLL. And isn’t massage therapy the best thing ever and in no way linked to prostitution? And how do I make an authentic 1900 French courtesan costume for under $30? While we’re here, let’s discuss polyamory and public nudity without getting our panties in a bunch.”
Yeah, I don’t think I can hope for a coherent post on all of my interests. I’d be better off with a whole forum for neo-hippie chicks. But neo-hippies bug the crap out of me.
I was going to write: “George W. Bush resigns and Jon Stewart becomes president!” but I figured, why go there?
You let me be your consultant, for a very reasonable fee of course.
Thanks folks; I’m glad somebody likes the idea of this thread. I woke up this morning and wondered if it came off as a “posting while drunk” sort of idea (BTW, I wasn’t, and I rarely drink, FWIW.)
True, those would have broader appeal, though I was more wondering what type of thread would make you (or me, or…) personally grab the monitor and kiss it, would act on you like candy-coated crack*, or at least compel you to keep the thread going in an extra window as you went through the day.
I think that trivia is on some level almost always an obssessive thing, also a personal thing, and I hink that each one of us has a subject or two that we almost can’t help showing interest in whenever the subject comes up.
*…And just for trivia’s sake, who first said this about the SDMB?
Thread title: Star Trek Theology - Impact on Same Sex Relations and Presidential Elections
Throw in the OP something about kittens, driving, and chocolate, then sit back and watch it play out.
“Can anyone explain the themes of Dune with respect to the overall six-book storyline and current events, and offer theories regarding how these themes have been expressed in Herbert’s other works?”
OR
“Hey, atheists: lets have a calm rational discussion about how we might convince the rest of the world that we’re right and the consequences of attempting to do so. In the meantime, we can also discuss the evolution of religion and the human mind, and scientific evidence that disputes the factuality of all religions on earth.”
I’m not holding my breath or anything.
[wishes she could cyber-flirt as well as Kythereia]
Those are actually all topics I have had occasion to discuss here (well, except the Wicca in BtVS), just not all at once.
